The first of the black-type races on the Railway Stakes Day program in Perth this weekend sees the fillies and mares face off in the Jungle Mist Classic 2015.
Set to run as Ascot Race 3 at 1:04pm (WA time), this year’s $100,000 Listed Jungle Mist Classic (1200m) has attracted a small 10-starter field.
The latest Jungle Mist Classic betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au are dominated by an odds-on favourite Sheidel jumping from barrier two with Patrick Carbery retaining the ride on David Harrison’s Holy Roman Emperor four-year-old.
The smart mare boasts a strong six-from-seven record at Ascot and is undefeated over the 1200m with two wins from as many starts over the distance she runs over again this weekend.
Last time out she stepped up in class for a brave fourth beaten only one and a half lengths by Rock Magic in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m), and over more distance against her own kind this weekend she looks hard to beat.
Two of her rivals are also under double figures for the win with the returning Ideal Image ($4.50) and Meteoroid ($7.50) drawn in barriers nine and eight respectively.
Top hoop William Pike is back aboard Adam Durrant’s More Than Ready four-year-old Ideal Image who races for the first time since a Belmont win over the distance in early August.
Simon Miller’s Northern Meteor mare Meteoroid is another four-year-old up in class here shooting for her third win from as many starts over 1200m in her first Ascot assignment since December last year.
Outside of the single figure fancies are a number of other livewire chances for a top three finish including the rails-drawn Hashtag ($10)who has a strong 1200m record to date (4-2-2-0) and Miller’s other chance Fuld’s Bet ($13) out to atone for two unplaced runs this time in.
So will the odds-on favourite salute for the Jungle Mist Classic punters or is there an upset on the cards this weekend?
#2 Sheidel ($1.65)
This ultra-consistent four-year-old is the odds-on market mover for a reason and looks very hard to beat with a gun Ascot record and undefeated status over the distance. Stepping back up to 1200m looks ideal after three runs over 1000 – 1100m including the fourth in the Colonel Reeves in tougher company beaten only 1.5 lengths. Drawn to win in barrier two and after big efforts against some very tough sprinters over her career, this should be well within reach.
#4 Ideal Image ($4.50)
Pike stays on this gun four-year-old who won over the distance at Belmont last time out to take her 1200m record to two wins and a third from three starts. Ascot record isn’t quite as imposing (6-1-0-2), but does have form against this weekend’s favourite when third to Sheidel over the track and distance in February. Came from the back to win last time out and fresh is best for this fast finisher.
#1 Vampi Lass ($21)
Plenty of value in Vampi Lass, the Ben Pearce-trained Bletchingly Park five-year-old out to atone for a failed July run at Belmont last time out. It’s been a while between runs then and she is yet to win first-up, but a good third behind star galloper Delicacy in a Lark Hill trial at the start of the month is a good place to start. She has winning form up to 1800m so will improve with more distance, but fresh at this distance looks okay for an improvement on her sixth in the same race 12 months ago.
