Messene Fit for 2015 Railway Stakes

Team Hawkes have been pleased with the results posted by veteran miler Messene this time in and are confident the addition of renowned hoop Damian Browne to the saddle for Saturday’s 2015 Railway Stakes (1600m) will go a long way towards the horse securing a maiden win at the highest level.

Returning to racing this time for a credible fifth in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) on August 8th, Messene ran on for an impressive third amongst talented company in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) before failing to maintain a lead and eighth in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) on September 12th.

Recovering well for third in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) on September 26th, the Lonhro gelding mustered a huge performance to run fourth in the featured Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 3rd before finishing eighth in the Group 3 Guvera Stakes (1400m) last time out.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes has been thrilled the work produced and condition displayed by the seven-year-old and is confident the Ascot conditions will play directly into Messene’s chances in the 2015 Railway Stakes.

“He has settled in really well,” Hawkes told The West Australian.

“A photo was sent to me this morning and he looks nice and bright.

“He just went for a trot and canter at Ascot.”

Finishing outside the first three only a handful of times since first appearing on course competitively in early 2012, Messene has secured an impressing nine wins and five minors through a total of twenty-two appearances.

Arguably posting career-best form to date through a short but impressive 2014 Autumn Carnival campaign, Messene won each of the Listed National Sprint (1400m) and Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) before placing a credible seventh in the capacity Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) during The Championships. is currently offering the best 2015 Railway Stakes odds, for which Messene can be taken at a generous quote of $13 for success!
