Hopfgarten To Return In Brisbane Handicap

Trainer Robert Heathcote has confirmed that Hopfgarten will have his next race start in the 2015 Brisbane Handicap at Doomben on December 5.

Hopfgarten was sent to Melbourne for a 2015 Spring Racing Carnival campaign and he was far from disgraced, but missed the placings in all four of his race starts.

The Mossman gelding ran the quickest closing sectionals in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 26 but could finish no better than 12th and he had no luck in running when tenth in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 10.

Hopfgarten dropped back in grade for the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on October 24 and he finished a credible sixth before he was caught in the worst part of the track when sixth behind Awesome Rock in the Listed Symphony Stakes (1800m) at Flemington on November 3.

Heathcote told AAP that he was happy with the way that Hopfgarten performed during his stint in Melbourne and he revealed that the five-year-old would remain in work and contest the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m) at Doomben on December 5, the Listed Bernborough Handicap (1600m) at the same venue on December 19 and the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy (1800m) at the Gold Coast on January 9.

“He didn’t have much luck in any of his Melbourne runs and I was happy with him,” Heathcote said.

“He looks the ideal type for the summer carnival races and the Magic Millions Trophy.

“Hopfgarten is having a freshen-up on the water walker and I will bring him back into the stables this week.”

“It is too soon for Recognition Stakes which is on Saturday, but he will be ready for the Brisbane Handicap over 1600 metres two weeks after that.”

Hopfgarten made his racing debut in Brisbane in April of 2013 and he worked his way through the grades as a three-year-old before he made his debut at Group level with a strong win in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm on April 26.

He added another black-type win to his racing resume when he recorded a dominant three and a half lengths win in the Brisbane Handicap and he performed well without winning in races like the Listed Logic Tails Stakes (1630m), Toowoomba Cup (2150m) and Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) during the 2015 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
