Sandown Stakes 2015 Betting Tips

The fourth race on a top nine-event card at Sandown Racecourse for Zipping Classic Day on Saturday is the 2015 Sandown Stakes, betting tips for the handicap clash found below.

There are 14 middle-distance gallopers in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m), which runs as Race 4 at 2:45pm (AEST) on the all-black type program.

Sitting top of the current Sandown Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at a firm $2.90 is the Chris Waller-trained Good Project who has run top three in all five of his starts this time in.

The four-year-old Not A Single Doubt stallion is up in class on the weekend for his first stakes run of this campaign, his latest start producing a second to Malaguerra in a Benchmark 90 over 1400m at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

He carried 60kg that day and will appreciate the 54kg minimum on Saturday with James McDonald in the saddle from a wide gate 13 draw.

The next best in Sandown Stakes betting are Charmed Harmony ($6) carrying 58kg with Glen Boss booked to ride the John Sadler-trained Hussonet six-year-old who comes off a fourth to Disposition in the Group 3 Chatham Stakes (1400m) from Derby Day and early market mover Mr Utopia ($10 into $8.50) who is out to atone for a last place finish (14th) in the same October 31 lead-up race.

So can the top fancies finish in the bookies’ order or should you look further down the markets at the likes of the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained import Tashbeeh ($9) and Darren Weir’s Primus gelding Burning Front ($13) who are after the upset Sandown Stakes result?

1st

#12 Tashbeeh ($9)

Good odds on offer for the imported Lindsay Park-raced Commands stallion who has had three runs down under since returning from a sting overseas. Not having won since success at January back in late January, the four-year-old has run third twice this time in including behind Malaguerra on Cup Day in the same race that produces Saturday’s favourite Good Project (2nd). Carries the 54kg minimum this weekend with Michael Walker taking over from McDonald in the saddle. He looks to be improving with each run and is drawn a treat in barrier two. Reaching peak fitness and with the right run from the gate he can get back to winning form.

2nd

#2 Charmed Harmony ($6)

Sadler’s gelding won four consecutive races before a fifth in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) when beaten just over a length on September 26. His next run was a credible Chatham Stakes fourth from a wide barrier (13 of 14), which he can improve on here from a better gate (eight) even though he goes up in weight from 56.5kg to 58kg. Ready to bounce back and he’ll be right up there in the finish giving them something to chase if he gets a nice rolling run at his first look at the track.

3rd

#8 Good Project ($2.90)

Top fancy in betting and the lead-up form has been very consistent. This is a tougher class though and he hasn’t been in black-type company since his seventh in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) during the winter. The weight drop from 60kg to 54kg is the big advantage though and should be flying under McDonald with the chance to get across from out wide.
