2015 Summoned Stakes Betting Tips

The final race on the Sandown card for Saturday’s Zipping Classic Day meeting is the Summoned Stakes 2015 for the mares, betting tips for which are detailed below.

Coronation Shallan

Set to run as Race 9 at 5:55pm (AEST), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) field will run at capacity with 16 starters including the first emergency Holy Cow coming in for the withdrawn Into The Mist (5).

Heading the current Summoned Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the Zipping Classic on Saturday, at $4.80 is Scarlet Billows for Melbourne Cup winning trainer – jockey team Darren Weir and Michelle Payne.

A five-year-old daughter of Street Cry, Scarlet Billows was fifth in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day before a Group 3 win in the Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes on Melbourne Cup Day.

She’s tipped to go back-to-back here at her first look at 1500m but her second run at the track following a third at Sandown Hillside back in April of last year.

The next best in the Summoned Stakes odds are the Chris Waller-trained Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes third placed She’s Clean ($7.50), fellow Sydney-trained mare Solicit ($8.50) who comes off a Group 1 eighth in the Myer Classic and Waller’s other runner Ballet Suite ($8.50).

So can the best in betting be best over the line or is there value further down the markets from the likes of the market mover Coronation Shallan ($12 into $9) who ran seventh last Saturday in the Emirates Stakes or Lee & Anthony Freedman’s Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old Matilija ($10)?

#3 Coronation Shallan ($9)

Happy to follow the money trail and jump on the market mover in the last, Brett Scott’s Strategic six-year-old is drawn to win in barrier two with Daniel Stackhouse back aboard after Michael Dee rose her in the Emirates in Group 1 company last weekend. She’s on the short seven-day back-up but she handled that well from a Group 3 Caulfield Cup Day third to win the Group 3 Teiso Stakes over the mile at Moonee Valley a week later. Dropping in class and distance, she goes up notably in the weights but against her own kind in peak form could be hard to hold out.

#4 Scarlet Billows ($4.80)

Race favourite with Payne aboard in gate nine who was impressive winning the Group 3 on Cup Day over 100m shorter by over two lengths from a similar barrier (10). This is a step up in distance but she looks like she’ll handle it and has form around Chautauqua beaten only 1.3 lengths by him earlier this campaign. She’s in flying form then and has a nice late finish on her so if she can get into a good spot from the barrier she’s a chance to salute for the favourite-backers.

#7 Precious Gem ($17)

Great price on a talented daughter of Econsul, the six-year-old prepared by Gwenda Johnstone. She was disappointing when last in the Teiso Stakes in a one-off poor performance from an otherwise consistent six-year-old who improved with a second over 1700m on Melbourne Cup Day last start. She carried 58kg that run and drops a kilo in this with a good barrier (3) and in line for a sweet run with 1500m to suit.
