The latest two mile race of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival takes place on Zipping Classic Day this weekend with the Sandown Cup 2015, betting tips for the staying showdown found below.
A field of 14 remains in the mix for this year’s $150,000 Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) after the early scratching of the Robbie Laing-trained Cuban Fighter.
Leading Sandown Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $5 for the win are co-favourites De Little Engine and Almoonqith.
The Danny O’Brien-trained De Little Engine enjoyed his first win of the season dropping back in class from a Group 3 Geelong Cup seventh to win over 2800m at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
He rises in distance again with his first 3200m run on the weekend and is tipped to appreciate a drop from 57kg last time out to the 54kg minimum on Saturday.
Almoonqith on the other hand goes up in the weights from the 53kg he carried to a luckless 18th in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) to 59kg on the weekend, Michael Walker taking over from Dwayne Dunn in the saddle.
Before the failed Melbourne Cup effort, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained stallion won the Geelong Cup, winning form he is out to return to this weekend.
Also high up the Sandown Cup odds are the likes of Chris Waller’s reigning Sydney Cup winner over the distance Grand Marshall who has been well supported early backed in from $7.50 to $6 and the Gai Waterhouse-trained The Offer ($5.50) who won last year’s Sydney Cup and this year’s Bendigo Cup before an eighth in the Melbourne Cup on November 3.
So do the bookies have it right or is there an upset Sandown Cup result on the cards from the likes of John Thompson’s 37-start veteran son of Zabeel Tremec ($16) or even the returning champ Renew ($21)?
#2 Almoonqith ($5)
Lindsay Park’s Dynaformer six-year-old was impressive winning the Geelong Cup over the mile and a half by a strong margin despite things not going his way. That earned him a shot at the ‘race that stops a nation’, which he lost when getting caught back and failing to make up the ground. He has the chance to bounce back here with another two mile run against easier company. Has a big weight and wide gate but class and proven ability.
#3 Grand Marshal ($6)
Plenty of early money on this autumn’s Sydney Cup champ who won that two mile feature at big odds for trainer of the season Waller. He’ll get the run of the race on Saturday from barrier two with the in-form James McDonald in the saddle. Another hard-luck Melbourne Cup story from this spring, the Dansili gelding out to prove his genuine two miler status and with the right run can do that being rock hard fit.
#1 The Offer ($5.50)
Tipping the Melbourne Cup form to stack-up here and class to outrun weights. Heaviest weighted is Waterhouse’s recent Bendigo Cup champ with 60kg, and while he’ll need to be at his best with those kilos, the brave eighth in the world’s richest handicap last start was a beauty. In-form and even with the weight could be hard to hold out.
