Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Darren Weir is on track for another stellar Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival meeting this weekend at Sandown Hillside with ace chances in the day’s two Group 2 features including Mahuta in the Sandown Guineas 2015.
After scoring the upset in the world’s richest handicap on the first Tuesday of November when 101/1 shot Prince Of Penzance got the gun run to win the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m), the Ballarat-based Weir is looking for more feature race success on Saturday.
He saddles-up last Saturday’s Queen’s Cup winner Dandino against just seven rivals in the Zipping Classic and also has the flying three-year-old Mahuta as a top hope in Sandown Race 7 at 4:40pm (AEST) – the $250,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m).
A final field of 15 three-year-olds face off in this year’s Sandown Guineas with Mahuta drawn wide in barrier 14 for jockey Brad Rawiller to overcome.
The Flying Spur colt shoots for his fourth win on the trot coming into the race on the back of some top runs including success over Holler in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Cup Day and his last start victory on Derby Day at Flemington in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).
While he gets the same distance and hoop as his Carbine victory, the gate is a definite query as he has won from barrier two in his two lead-up runs.
Also in double digits and backing up from a top run in the Carbine Club Stakes from October 31 is the Terry & Karina O’Sullivan-trained runner-up Patch Adams in gate 11 for Saturday’s rematch.
The Dane Shadow colt has been in consistent form this campaign including finishing only a quarter length off Mahuta last time out, an improved effort on his fifth in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) the run before at Moonee Valley.
Along with Mahuta there are two other last start winners in the Sandown Guineas line-up on the weekend with Tony McEvoy’s in-form filly Don’t Doubt Mamma taking on the boys and the lightly-raced Robert Smerdon-trained Zafiki.
Based in Adelaide, Not A Single Doubt filly Don’t Doubt Mamma has won two of her past three starts including a smart two length effort over Indarra at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day in the Listed Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m).
She is back up to a mile after seeing the distance two back crossing sixth in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington, her Angaston trainer McEvoy keen to give her another go.
Zafiki meanwhile has had just the one career start to date winning over the mile straight away at Cranbourne on October 29 by one and a half lengths, Saturday her chance to step up in class at just her second run.
Two other notable hopefuls with wide barriers to overcome in the Guineas with the Murray Baker-trained Kiwi raider Dal Cielo (12) and Matt Laurie’s perennial runner-up Sea Of Tranquility (15).
Baker won this season’s Caulfield Cup with Mongolian Khan and the Emirates Stakes last Saturday with Turn Me Loose, his Per Incanto colt Dal Cielo now after a consolation win after unplaced efforts in the Caulfield Guineas (11th) and Coolmore Stud Stakes (6th).
Sea Of Tranquility comes off three straight second place efforts, the latest being on Crown Oaks Day in the wet at Flemington when runner-up to Hursley in an 1800m black-type.
