Adelaide’s Tony McEvoy is confident in the lead-up spring form of his classy filly in Melbourne Don’t Doubt Mamma as she prepares to take on the boys in Saturday’s 2015 Sandown Guineas on Zipping Classic Day.
A total of 20 three-year-olds make up the early entries for this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m), one of two Group 2 features on the Sandown Hillside program this weekend.
Among the Sandown Guineas nominations are eight fillies including McEvoy’s Angaston-based daughter of Not A Single Doubt.
Don’t Doubt Mamma has won three of her eight starts to date including the Listed Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
That was an improved effort as she stepped down in class and distance from her sixth to Badawiya in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) in early October.
McEvoy though believes she is more than capable of a strong Group 2 mile run at Sandown on Saturday.
Her record hints at a query over the 1600m, with the filly winning both her 1400m races strongly, but far from as strong in her sole mile run in the Edward Manifold.
Either way, McEvoy wants to find out once and for sure, although he does also have her nominated for the $120,000 Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) over 200m shorter against her own sex only as a ‘Plan B’.
“I want to see her again at a mile. I believe she’ll run a mile,” he told AAP on Sunday.
“There’s the two races at Sandown. There’s the Twilight Glow where she’ll get the penalty or the Sandown Guineas where she gets in very well, so I’m a bit keen to go to the Guineas and take on the boys.
“I’ll have her (nominated) in both races. She was really impressive on Tuesday and she’s come out of that race magnificently.”
After racing away on Cup Day to win the black-type by two lengths displaying a powerful late burst after jockey Dwayne Dunn gave her a quiet ride early, Don’t Doubt Mamma had excuses in the Edward Manifold according to McEvoy.
“It was either the firm ground or it’s possible she didn’t run the mile. But when you see her explode like she did on Tuesday you’d be amazed, ridden like that, if she wouldn’t run a mile,” McEvoy said.
“So I’d like to find out now and then we know for next year where to aim her.”
The other Sandown Guineas-nominated fillies this spring are Ashlee Marie, Lexus Hybrid runner-up Indarra, the Mick Price-trained sixth placegetter in the same lead-up Irada, her stablemate Maysam who finished one better on Cup Day, the Clarry Conners-trained Lexus Hybrid fourth placed Not A Single Doubt filly Queen Of Wands, The Grey Flash and Zafiki.
Robert Smerdon prepares New Zealand-bred Zafiki who has had just the one run to date when winning on debut over the mile straight away at Cranbourne in late October by a comprehensive one and a half lengths.
