2015 Sandown Guineas Nominations Feature Mahuta

Flying colt Mahuta from the Melbourne Cup winning stables of Darren Weir is one of the in-form headline nominations for Saturday’s Sandown Guineas 2015 on Zipping Classic Day.

One of two Group 2 highlights on the program at Sandown’s Park Hillside course, the $250,000 Sandown Guineas (1600m) has attracted 20 early entries this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Last year’s winner Petrology came off a black-type win at Flemington and this year so does the Weir-trained son of Flying Spur Mahuta who made it three on the trot on Victoria Derby Day.

Coming off his first black-type win in the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield from October 17, Mahuta franked the form with a victory in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) a fortnight later.

That is a win he will be out to emulate over the same distance at a different track on the weekend as Weir’s sole nominee for the set weights feature.

Carbine Club Stakes runner-up Patch Adams is also nominated for the Sandown Guineas rematch with his last start conqueror, the Terry & Karina O’Sullivan-trained Dane Shadow colt having won just one of his 10 starts to date.

He has race experience at the Park Hillside track though when third there over 1300m back in August.

The only other last start winners along with Mahuta in the mix are the Tony McEvoy-trained Adelaide filly Don’t Doubt Mamma and Robert Smerdon’s lightly-raced Makfi filly Zafiki.

A so far consistent daughter of Not A Single Doubt, Don’t Doubt Mamma improved on a sixth in the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) from early October when winning the Listed Lexus Hybrid Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

Zafiki meanwhile has had just the one career start that she saluted in over the mile by a comprehensive one and a half lengths at Cranbourne on October 29.

Easily the highest rated according to handicaps is the Moira Murdoch-trained Marky Mark (90) from New Zealand, the Kiwi raider yet to run in Australia under race conditions.

The Makfi gelding is a Group 1 winner in the Sires’ Produce over 1400m from late March back home and was last seen running fourth over the same distance at Hastings on October 3 before heading down under.

He trialled at Canterbury over 1190m on October 20 and was sixth to subsequent Myer Classic winner and close Emirates Stakes runner-up Politeness.

Another New Zealand visitor in the mix is Dal Cielo from the Emirates Stakes winning stables of Murray Baker whose flying four-year-old Turn Me Loose led all the way to beat a fast-finishing Politeness in the $1 million Group 1 mile feature at Flemington over the weekend.

Per Incanto colt Dal Cielo hasn’t been able to enjoy quite the same success in Melbourne this season finishing out of the money in his two Group 1 assignments after his first-up third in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) back in September.

He ran 11th in the Caulfield Guineas over a mile and sixth in the Coolmore Stud Stakes last start on Derby Day when dropped back down to 1200m in a race that saw odds-on favourite Exosphere run third to Chris Waller’s 41/1 roughie Japonisme.

Other notable Sandown Guineas nominees this season include the John O’Shea-trained Demonstrate who ran third at Flemington last weekend in stakes’ company, and He’s Our Rokkii prepared by last year’s winning trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig.
