Palentino ($7.50) was only having his third race start but Payne was able to time her run to perfection to down the John O’Shea trained Demonstrate ($5.50) who looked the winner at the 100m mark.

Glen Boss gave the $4.20 favourite Ngarimu a nice run midfield but was not able to pick up the first two placegetters and finished two and a quarter lengths behind the winner in third spot.

Payne has been aboard Palentino for all his three race starts and the pair were able to record a win last start in a 1300m Maiden at Stawell on October 12.

Payne wrote her name down in the history books when she became the first female jockey to win the Group 1 $6m Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on Tuesday on the Darren Weir trained $101 chance Prince Penzance.

The loveable young jockey was at her best again on Palentino and even though the Teofilo three year old was trapped three wide, Payne was able to keep him balanced and timed her winning run in the straight to the second.

The Flemington track had been upgraded from a soft 7 to soft 6 after race 2 and Payne said that Palentino handled the conditions perfectly

“I come her with a bit of expectation, but I didn’t know about the track, but when I walked it, it was really good the track. It has dried out a lot and was no problem at all for him,” Payne said.

Wier had also won the previous race, the Group 3 $300,000 Queen’s Cup (2600m), with English import Dandino and was all smiles again in the winner’s stall and said there was a chance Palentino could back up next week at Sandown and run in the Group 2 $250,000 Sandown Guineas (1600m).

“He will go back to Warrnambool and if he has a good week we will run,” Weir said.

“It has been an amazing week and an amazing day today really.”

“I liked this horse from day one and I trained his mother who won a couple in town.”

“I loved him as a yearling and he was a beautiful type and I think we bought him for about eighty grand.”

“He had a beautiful run today three wide with cover and he let down really well.”

“We targeted this race after he won at Stawell.”
