Dandino outstays rivals in Queen’s Cup

Rejuvenated stayer Dandino broke through for his first win for trainer Darren Weir when he took out the Group 3 $300,000 Queen’s Cup (2600m) at Flemington today.

Weir took over the training of the former English stayer earlier in the year in an attempt to bring him back from a significant suspensory ligament injuries and his effort today repaid the Melbourne Cup winning trainer’s hard work.

Dandino was also able to pick an extra $100,000 for his win today after becoming eligible to collect the bonus if he won the Queen’s Cup after being balloted out of the Melbourne Cup.

Today was Dandino’s sixth start for the Weir stable and he put the writing on the wall last start at Geelong when he ran home to fill the runner’s stall behind Almoonqith in the Group 3 $300,000 Geelong Cup (2400m) on October 21.

“It is great to get a win with him,” Weir said.

“Obviously he came to us with a pretty significant injury and there is a lot of people I need to thanks there.”

“When he ran at Geelong, the plan was to try to win at Geelong and take him to the Cup and hopefully get a penalty. He had every chance at Geelong and the winner was too strong on the day.”

Winning rider Ben Melham gave Dandino ($3.90) a perfect run in fourth position and eased him out at the top of the straight and after laying in half way down the straight hampering the runner up Secret Number ($2.70 favourite), was able to balanced up and score a comfortable one and three quarter lengths win.

Secret Number was able to recover from the interference to run second with $31 outsider Don Doremo sticking on for third.

The Gai Waterhouse trained Bonfire ($9) with Michael Walker in the saddle set the pace in the early and middle stages but faded in the run to the line to finish fifth, almost seven lengths from the winner.
