Chris Waller’s progressive four-year-old Ballet Suite is tipped to break a notable winning drought when she takes on a field of her own kind at Flemington Racecourse on Emirates Stakes Day this Saturday in the Matriarch Stakes 2015.
A final field of 16 starters plus two emergencies is engaged to run in Flemington Race 8 at 5:05pm (AEST) in this year’s $300,000 Group 2 Presto Matriarch Stakes (2000m), Ballet Suite leading the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% across the card!
Drawn a treat in barrier four with Cox Plate winning hoop Hugh Bowman taking over aboard the four-year-old daughter of High Chaparral, Ballet Suite comes off a close fourth beaten under two lengths by Coronation Shallan in the Group 3 Teiso Stakes (1600m) on Cox Plate Day that produced last year’s Matriarch Stakes winner.
One-from-two over the 2000m having won over the distance in black-type company in Brisbane during the winter, Ballet Suit is after her first win since and is Group 1 performed including her fourth to Fenway in the Group 1 Vinery Stakes Stakes (2000m) in Sydney during the autumn.
Four of the $4.60 favourite’s rivals are also under double figures to win the Matriarch Stakes this weekend including the $6.50 second elect and 59.5kg top weight under the set weights plus penalties conditions is Kris Lees’ Lucia Valentina.
Jumping from a wide gate 16 (into 15) draw with Damien Oliver aboard, the dual Group 1 winning daughter of Savabeel hasn’t won a race since the 2014 Turnbull Stakes over this track and distance in elite level company over 12 months ago, but is down in class after three Group 1 runs leading up to Saturday including her ninth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) last start.
The next best in betting are the rails-drawn Zarzali ($8) and Manageress ($8.50).
James Cummings’ progressive Hussonet four-year-old Zarzali gets the inside run with Glen Boss in the saddle, the same barrier and hoop as she had winning over 1700m at the track on Melbourne Cup Day only on Tuesday.
Manageress meanwhile jumps from 10 (into 9) with Chris Parnham staying on the Magnus four-year-old out to atone for her eighth in the Teiso Stakes a fortnight ago, before which she was second in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (14009m) at Flemington.
Rounding out the hopes under $10 at $9 is Ungrateful Ellen, Robert Smerdon’s Grey Swallow four-year-old a dual Group 1 placegetter in the winter when runner-up to this season’s runaway Cox Plate winning mare Winx in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) in late May.
