John O’Shea’s unraced filly Gloriette has opened narrow favourite in an open field and market for the first on Saturday’s Emirates Stakes Day line-up at Flemington, the Maribyrnong Plate 2015.
Kicking off the racing action on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival as Flemington Race 1 at 12:20pm (AEST), this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Racing.com Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) features a final field of just nine juveniles.
Only three of the two-year-olds in the set weights race have previous race experience, but it is one of the debutants currently sitting top of the odds at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% across the card on Saturday.
Drawn the favourable inside alley for her maiden run down the Flemington straight, the nicely-bred Lonhro filly Gloriette has James McDonald in the saddle after the in-form Sydney-based jockey rode her to a smart trial win over 800m at Cranbourne on October 20.
She currently pays $4.40 to beat her eight rivals on the weekend after impressing in said trial and from the draw could be hard to beat.
In a super tight Maribyrnong Plate betting market there are six other single figure hopes including two $5.50 second elects Dalradian and Power Up Rise.
Drawn the outside alley for jockey John Allen to overcome, Reward For Effort colt Dalradian is the best credentialed of the runners with two runs for two wins to date.
His latest was in the Inglis race at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day and he jumps from wider than gate five for the first time in his career.
He is prepared by this year’s Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir and the previous race experience could be the deciding factor.
Power Up Rise is yet to have an official start was won his lead-up trial by over two lengths at the end of last month.
Jumping from barrier four with Damien Oliver in the saddle, John McArdle’s Hard Spun gelding will be out to repeat that trial form over the extra metres on Saturday.
The next best in betting are Valliano ($6) and Missrock ($6.50) who are the other two non-debutants in the line-up.
Dwayne Dunn has the ride on two-time starter Valliano from the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig stable, the Equiano colt coming off a second to Saturday rival Dalradian when beaten only a nose at the Valley.
Missrock meanwhile won the Listed Debutant Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield on Guineas Day, a race Valliano was third past the post in, before the Robbie Laing-trained Fastnet Rock filly ran third on Melbourne Cup Day in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes (1000m) last start.
Rounding out the single figure juveniles to win is market mover Flying Artie ($9 into $7.50), Mick Price’s nicely-drawn Artie Schiller colt untrialled but jumping from gate two with Dale Smith taking the ride.
