William Buick is thrilled to have picked up a ride in the 2015 Melbourne Cup and is hopeful he can play a part in delivering lead Godolphin trainer Saeed Bin Suroor a maiden win in the Race That Stops a Nation aboard clear market mover Sky Hunter.
Bin Suroor has brought a number of Godolphin’s standout stayers to Australian shores in search of Melbourne Cup glory since the turn of the century but has only managed to saddle a handful of second-place finishers at best.
Buick has partnered Sky Hunter through a number of strong pieces of work this week and is confident the horse is at peak condition for the 2015 Melbourne Cup, and is ready to justify his huge support in betting markets.
“He’s been targeted for this race,” Buick told AAP.
“We’ve had this in mind for a long time and Saeed and the whole team are really happy with him.
“He’s got a nice draw in seven. For me he looks like a horse who has the credentials for the race. He travels well, he stays well and he has a finishing kick.
“And the recent (wet) weather won’t harm his chances either.
“A flat two miles, I can’t see it being a problem.”
Sky Hunter has finished outside the first three only a handful of times through eleven career starts so far; posting an impressive six wins and two minors through Europe and the Middle-East.
Beginning his racing career under the guidance of leading French trainer Andre Fabre, the Motivator gelding won each of his first three starts through late 2012 and early 2013 before running a credible third in the Group 1 Prix Du Jockey Club (2100m).
Capping a short but strong 2014 racing campaign with success in the Group 3 Burlison Inns Stakes (2419m), Sky Hunter justified the decision for a trip abroad first-up this year when producing a monumental turn of foot to beat a talented field to the line in the Group 2 Dubai City Of Gold (2410m) on March 7th.
Having contested only one other start in 2015, the Northern Hemisphere five-year-old booked his ticket to the 2015 Melbourne Cup when second in the Group 3 Arc Trial (2217m) on September 19th.
Sky Hunter has continued to receive huge support in 2015 Melbourne Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au cutting in from an opening quote of $67 to currently figure as clear 34 market mover.
