Talented three-year-old Mahuta has continued his slick run of form through his maiden racing campaign at Flemington this afternoon; beating a talented field to the line in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).
Mahuta flew the gates in the Carbine Club Stakes and was allowed to stride forward by jockey Brad Rawiller; taking up the pace alongside Takedown and Bassett and setting a noticeably quick tempo for the field of ten.
Rounding onto the final straight with a clear racing line, Mahuta immediately responded when asked for an extra effort by Rawiller; pulling clear and maintaining a strong-enough sprint to withstand a late charge from Patch Adams and post a third-consecutive race win.
Rawiller delivered a gem of a ride aboard Mahuta to win the 2015 Carbine Club Stakes and was quick to lay all the praise on the talented colt in the success.
“The speed was pretty good in the first part but they slowed up and at the 700m they were just going too steady,” Rawiller said.
“I sang out get going, get going because we couldn’t wait for the ones behind us to get moving as well.
“Mine was sort of on speed but made a quick move and gee he was tough, he just kept fighting.
“I was worried at the furlong because I knew Bassett was right there and it looked like I’d made an early move but he’s a tough horse – he’s been a different horse since he’s had the blinkers on.”
Bassett loomed as the major danger to Mahuta’s chances of winning the Carbine Club Stakes with only 200m to run, but it was an impressive turn of foot mustered by backmarker and rank outsider Patch Adams ($26) which almost caused a boil over.
In taking out the 2015 Carbine Club Stakes, Mahuta has now posted an impressive three wins and a minor through only five career starts.
Having taken out a Kyneton minor over 1450m on October 8th, the Flying Spur colt has more than stamped himself as one to follow having also taken out the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago.
The Flemington track continues to receive notable rainfall on Derby Day, but Rawiller confirmed racing conditions are still great.
“It’s still holding together beautifully, it’s a magnificent track,” Rawiller added.
“With a bit of cut in it we’ll see how it goes if the rain continues, but it’s beautiful now.”
