Another quality line-up of female gallopers will line-up in the 2015 Myer Classic field at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday for Victoria Derby Day, betting tips for the mile feature detailed below.
There is one filly and 14 older mares making up the field for this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) that runs as Flemington Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEST) one event before the card closer on the all-Group race program.
Two runners at opposite ends of the weight-for-age scale are battling for top spot in the latest Myer Classic odds, which will be open at Best Tote or SP + 20% along with all other Flemington races on Saturday only at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Narrow $4.50 top fancy is Stay With Me in the outside alley (15) as she looks to make history as the first ever Myer Classic winning three-year-old.
She has class proven by her Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) win last time out, but still needs to beat the older rivals for the first time since the race was inaugurated, which is an imposing hoodoo to break.
The money has come hard and fast then for the far more experienced Chris Waller-trained former Oaks winner Royal Descent who has been backed in from $7 to $4.80 to atone for a dead last in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) last time out.
Jockey Glen Boss took Waller’s star Redoute’s Choice six-year-old up front and she faded, but can make up for it with a Myer win over the mile from gate five with Hugh Bowman aboard on the back of his Cox Plate triumph on stablemate Winx.
The only other single figure hope is Azkadellia ($8.50), the four-year-old’s trainer Ciaron Maher no stranger to Group 1 success with his mares.
So will the top three in betting be the first three over the line in the Myer Classic result this weekend or should you be tipping an upset for value from a mare such as the Ladies Day Vase winner Miss Rose De Lago ($11) or the in-form Robert Smerdon-trained Politeness ($14) coming off back-to-back Group 3 Caulfield wins?
#1 Royal Descent ($4.80)
We tipped her in the Caulfield Cup over the mile and a half, but a horror run and fading finish saw her cross nearly 30 lengths away dead last. We are giving her another go and sticking with Waller’s $2.7 million earner who has run top three in all her other runs this campaign including the Turnbull Stakes third over 2000m two back. She is also Group 1 placed over a mile in Sydney this prep, and from nine 1600m wins before she drops back to that distance this weekend she boasts nine second or third finishes. She can break the mile maiden here with the right run from Cox Plate winning hoop Bowman who guides her form gate five giving her every chance to show off her class two weeks after the failure.
#12 Fenway ($20)
Big odds on offer for this big danger in barrier 12 with the flying Sydney-based James McDonald riding Lee & Shannon Hope’s High Chaparral four-year-old. She was 10th of 10 runners behind now Mackinnon Stakes favourite Stratum Star in a Caulfield Cup Day Group 3 over 2000m, but can bounce back here and return to the form that saw her win at her previous start in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley. The mile is a better distance and she’s back against her own kind, plus she’s a Group 1 winner from the autumn so the class is there.
#7 La Passe ($17)
Also a juicy price on offer for the ultra-consistent Weir-trained Street Sense mare who has won three of her past four starts including the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington two back giving her a two-from-three record at the course. She comes off another win when defeating Solicit in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes over the 1400m at Caulfield, a race that has produced two of the past three Myer Classic winners. She just needs to handle the extra 200m now and is drawn to do that in barrier three.
