Kicking off this year’s Derby Day action as Race 1 at 11:45am (AEST), the $200,000 Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) field is down to 10 starters after the early scratching of Marky Mark.

Of the remaining hopefuls the favourite in Carbine Club Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering an Extra 50% on your first Fixed Odds winner this Derby Day at Flemington, the favourite at $3.40 for the win is Bassett.

Jumping from barrier eight with Daniel Stackhouse retaining the ride on the Peter Moody-trained son of Savabeel, Bassett is down in class after a credible sixth beaten under three lengths last time out in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

That was his second Group 1 mile assignment following a fifth behind the same winner Press Statement in Brisbane’s JJ Atkins in the winter, and in an easier class field this weekend at the same distance he’s a livewire hope.

Three other three-year-olds are under double figures for the win in Carbine Club Stakes betting including the market mover Montauk ($5.50 into $4.20) drawn a treat in barrier four with last weekend’s Cox Plate winning hoop Hugh Bowman in the saddle.

Bowman can do little wrong at the moment and is primed for a gun run on this well-fancied Chris Waller-trained More Than Ready colt.

The nicely-bred youngster is up in class having his maiden black-type run and first start in Melbourne but was impressive a fortnight ago winning over the Randwick mile carrying 58.5kg by over a length.

Also at single-figures are Darren Weir’s Flying Spur colt Mahuta ($6) in barrier two shooting for a third win on the trot after back-to-back wins including the Listed Gothic Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day and the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Kiwi expat He’s Our Rokki ($6.50) looking to improve on his second over the Caulfield mile on October 14.

1st

#4 Mahutu ($6)

Barrier two is an ideal position for Weir’s Flying Spur colt to jump as he looks to make it a winning hat-trick from as many starts. He blitzed a lower class field by an impressive six lengths two back over 1450m at Kyneton before heading to Caulfield for his big city debut and first stakes assignment on October 17. He ran and won the Gothic Stakes that day defeating Holler who franked the form with a Group 3 Moonee Valley win on Cos Plate Day last weekend. He continues to step up, is out to match Holler’s win and should thrive over a mile.

2nd

#5 Montauk ($4.20)

Plenty of boxes ticked by the season’s best Waller, this nicely-bred colt shooting for a third win from his past four starts. He is a proven miler in Sydney in Benchmark 72 company last time out earning him this trip to Melbourne. Needs to handle the better class but will get a gun run from barrier five with Bowman aboard, and drops back 1.5kg from last start for this to aid his chances.

3rd

#3 Bassett ($3.40)

Deserving favourite who could still salute for the punters even from the wider gate. His Guineas run for sixth was a big effort and is twice Group 1 performed. He will be fitter for that run and ready to fire three runs in on the weekend making him tough to beat with the right run.
