Fifteen Confirmed in 2015 Myer Classic Field

Fifteen mares have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s 2015 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington Racecourse, highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.

Royal Descent was unable to figure in the closing stages of the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) a fortnight ago following a luckless run in transit, but will relish a return to mares’ company in the 2015 Myer Classic.

A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2013 edition of the Australian Oaks, Royal Descent has returned to racing in typically slick form this time; beating a handy field to the line in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) first-up before placing third in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) a fortnight later.

Having run a close second to stable mate Kermadec in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) in late September, Royal Descent could very well receive the run of the race in the Myer Classic from barrier 5 and will be partnered by leading hoop Hugh Bowman.

Trainer Chris Waller will launch a two-pronged attack on the 2015 Myer Classic after also confirmed Amicus in the final field.

A Group 1 winner over the distance having taken out the 2014 Thousand Guineas, Amicus stormed home to win the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m) and Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) upon resuming this time, but has failed to fire in each of her two most recent starts.

While requiring some luck in transit from barrier 11, the addition of Blake Shinn to the saddle should play to the strengths of the Fastnet Rock mare on Saturday.

Fenway quickly faded off the pace rounding onto the final straight in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) last start, but trainers Lee and Shannon Hope remain thrilled with the mare’s condition and are confident she’s a winning chance in the Myer Classic.

Returning to racing this year for consecutive fourth place finishes in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) and Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m), the High Chaparral mare completed an impressive start-to-finish performance to win the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on March 28th.

Returning to the paddock after placing second in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) on May 2nd, Fenway won the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) leading into her most recent flop and should have no issue returning to a mile on Saturday.

Having not considered the major Group 1 mares race at the beginning of her preparation, Darren Weir is offered a serious chance for success in the 2015 Myer Classic via La Passe, who will leave from barrier 3 with regular hoop Michelle Payne aboard.

Posting six wins and two minors through thirteen career starts so far, La Passe ran fourth in a Pakenham minor over 1200m on September 16th before delivering classy fields defeat in each of the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) most recently.

Weir has also confirmed May’s Dream and Atlantis Dream in the 2015 Myer Classic final field.

Stay With Me charged home to win the Thousand Guineas with ease three weeks ago and will carry only 49kgs in the 2015 Myer Classic as the field’s sole three-year-old.
