2015 Guvera Stakes Field Features Disposition

Second past the post in the Toorak Handicap last time out the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Disposition runs in the Guvera Stakes 2015 this weekend at Flemington Racecourse on Derby Day ahead of a possible Emirates Stakes assignment seven days later.

Due to run as Flemington Race 3 at 1:00pm (AEST), this year’s $200,000 Guvera Stakes (1400m) is the race formerly known as the Yellowglen Stakes and shapes up as a nice lead-up for Saturday week’s $1 million Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) back at the track on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Last year Hucklebuck completed the Yellowglen Stakes – Emirates Stakes double, which Reset four-year-old Disposition could also attempt this spring.

In early September he won a Flemington black-type over 1400m before a brave second when just a short half-head off Stratum Star in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clark Stakes (1400m).

He stepped up to a mile last start in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and posted another elite level second this time behind Lucky Hussler on October 10.

On Saturday Disposition drops right back in class and returns to a distance he has a gun record of two wins and two seconds from five previous runs over.

Jockey Damien Oliver retains the ride and has a wide barrier 11 of 16 draw to overcome in the capacity field with 57.5kg.

Heading the Guvera Stakes weights with 59kg and also suffering a blow with the outside alley is the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained Famous Seamus.

A seven-year-old son of Elusive City, the gelding lines up in his 43rd career start and 10th over the 1400m, a distance he is yet to win over.

Kathy O’Hara is in the saddle for the fourth time from as many runs this time in, the veteran’s last start being a seventh to Vashka carrying 59.5kg in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 17.

The next heaviest weighted in the race with 58.5kg but a far more favourable barrier four draw is the Team Hawkes-trained Messene.

The Lonhro seven-year-old was third to Vashka two back when only a half-length away in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) before a fourth behind subsequent runaway Cox Plate winning mare Winx in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) on October 3.

Messene has a nice 1400m record (6-3-1-1) so will appreciate the drop back from the mile for his first Melbourne run of the season, connections hoping the Epsom form around Chris Waller’s superstar Winx holds up.

The other Hawkes Racing runner in the Guvera Stakes field this season is Ninth Legion drawn out in barrier 12 with Tommy Berry aboard the last start Sale Cup sixth placegetter.

Ninth Legion was only 1.4 lengths off the winner in the Sale Cup last Sunday with 60kg on his back and can run a better race with 57kg this weekend after his Toorak Handicap fourth two back.

Other notable hopes coming off good lead-up runs into Saturday’s showdown include the John Sadler-trained seven-time winner over the distance Charmed Harmony who was fifth in the Sir Rupert beaten 1.35 lengths, the John O’Shea-trained San Diego and Chris Waller’s runner Good Project.
