All the money in Cox Plate betting on the $3 million, Group 1, 2040m classic today has been on the Chris Waller-trained Winx who is the sole mare in this year’s capacity Cox Plate field.

Looking to become the first since Pinker Pinker (2011) to beat the boys, the four-year-old daughter of Street Cry won the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) last time out but is yet to race at Moonee Valley or the Melbourne way.

She also has barrier one to stay out of trouble from, but that hasn’t stopped the punters coming for her in the Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au – home of Best Tote or SP + 20% on all the Moonee Valley races pre-jump this afternoon.

Winx has been heavily supported in from $7.50 to $5, but the late mail Cox Plate betting tips are for an upset from a nice-priced European visitor – Arod.

Paying $8.50, the horse is first-up here not having raced since our winter, but runs well fresh and has dual Cox Plate winning hoop Craig Williams in the saddle.

He should get a dream run from barrier five, which last produced a Cox Plate winner five years ago when So You Think won his second in 2010, and is unbeaten in his two previous starts over the distance.

With the better-fancied Irish galloper Highland Reel now on the drift in the markets out from $5 favouritism earlier in the week to $6, he looks a hard-not-to-include addition to all Cox Plate trifecta bets placed.

The stable won the race 12 months ago with Adelaide and is back with this in-form galloper who will get a top run from barrier four with Ryan Moore, who won the Cox Plate – Melbourne Cup double last spring, in the saddle.

For value outside of the single-figure hopes the late Cox Plate exotic tips are the fellow Waller-trained Preferment ($15) and the John O’Shea-trained Hartnell ($17).

Preferment is the right age for a Cox Plate win as a four-year-old and is in top form coming off back-to-back wins over the distance including Flemington’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at the start of the month.

Hartnell meanwhile is drawn nicely in gate three for the flying James McDonald and is out to improve on a Turnbull sixth, the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) winner a classy type that could just be looking for a touch further.
