Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A diminutive field of gallopers face off in Saturday’s Prince Of Wales Stakes 2015 at the controversial Ascot track in Perth, betting tips for the Summer Carnival lead-up found below.
Last weekend was the big reveal of the recently upgraded Ascot course, but very early on the card the meeting was abandoned due to the deteriorating track.
Conditions are expected to be much safer this weekend with the running of the $150,000 Group 3 Add Energy Group Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) that originally attracted just five hopefuls.
Now the field is down to just four with the early scratching of the rails-drawn Delicacy, Grant Williams’ brilliant mare and winner of the Schweppes Oaks – SA Derby in May withdrawn due to a minor injury.
Last season’s 3YO Filly of the Year in WA, Delicacy was set to resume racing on the weekend but a non-serious flesh wound on her shoulder sees her resuming run delayed with a Monday trial now on the cards.
Prince Of Wales Stakes betting is now led by Group 1 winner Magnifisio at an odds-on price of $1.60 through Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the Cox Plate Day card in Melbourne on the same day.
Vaughn Sigley prepares the Magnus mare who took out the Winterbottom Stakes at this track and distance last November but whose last start was a below par 12th to Miracles Of Life in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide.
She trialled well at home at Lark Hill in late September and runs very nice fresh with a first-up record to date of two wins and two seconds from seven resuming runs.
Hot on her heels in the current Prince Of Wales Stakes odds at $2 is then Dawn Approach jumping from barrier two.
A stablemate to the favourite, the fellow Sigley-trained Statue Of Liberty gelding is second-up but is yet to finish in the money two runs in.
In such a small field and set to get a nice run beside the better fancied mare, this five-year-old looks a strong hope to win his first race since the Northam Toyota Stakes in early May on the back of his third in the Listed Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) at Belmont on October 3.
So will the top two in betting run the quinella or will there be an upset in the Prince Of Wales Stakes on Saturday in WA by either Akhedasset ($19) or Zester ($34) who look out classed but could surprise?
2015 Prince Of Wales Stakes Trifecta Tip: #5 Magnifisio from #1 Dawn Approach and Akhedasset
There will be no surprises and no upsets in the Perth Group 3. With only four runners, two which aren’t up to the same class, this is the short-priced Sigley-trained stablemates’ for the taking.
Magnifisio will be too good fresh from the rails with Jason Brown aboard, especially at WFA as a Group 1 winner over this track and distance. She’s proven at WFA, runs well first-up and has brilliant records at the track (13-6-4-1) and distance (14-7-3-1).
