2015 Moonee Valley Vase Field Features Derby Hopes

The $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) runs Saturday week at Flemington Racecourse, and this Saturday’s $200,000 Group 2 Dilmah Exceptional Teas Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse is one of the traditional lead-ups to the Melbourne Cup Carnival classic.

Running as Moonee Valley Race 7 at 4:10pm (AEST), this year’s Moonee Valley Vase field features a dozen hopefuls, seven of which feature in the 2015 Victoria Derby first acceptances taken on Tuesday.

Leading the futures Victoria Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, where punters will find Best Tote or SP + 20% markets on the entire Cox Plate Day card this Saturday, is the Mick Price-trained Tarzino ($3.40).

The great grey Efficient (2006) was the last horse to complete the Moonee Valley Vase – Victoria Derby double, while two subsequent Derby winners had their final lead-up in the Vase with both Kibbutz (2007) and Lion Tamer (2010) running second.

Tarzino jumps from barrier 10 of 12 on Saturday with Craig Newitt retaining the ride on the Tavistock colt who is tipped to improve on a seventh in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) last time out when stepped out over more metres.

The next best fancied Victoria Derby hopes taking on Tarzino in the Vase on Saturday are the John O’Shea-trained last start Kyneton winner over 1850m Tally ($13), David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Caulfield Guineas fourth placed Group 2 Stutt Stakes winner Sovereign Nation ($15) and High Chaparral colt Hierarchal ($17) coming off a close fourth to Vanbrugh in Randwick’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) from the start of the month.

Other Derby-bound hopes in the line-up include Kentucky Flyer and Red Alto.

Three mares take on the boys in this year’s MV Vase, the top-rated of which is the Peter Moody-trained Pasadena Girl drawn the rails in barrier one with Hugh Bowman to ride.

Winner of the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) over the mile in Sydney back in April, the Savabeel filly is fourth-up this weekend with her latest run being a fourth in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m).

She is heading towards the $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington next month and currently pays $8 as the equal third pick in the futures markets for the fillies’ classic.

Also at $8 to win the Crown Oaks on November 5 and running in the Vase this weekend is the Ciaron Maher-trained Jameka.

Jumping from gate five with Damien Oliver in the saddle, the in-form daughter of Myboycharlie ran second to Stay With Me in the Thousand Guineas last time out and is after her first win since the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Flemington back in mid-March.

The last filly in the Vase field on Saturday is Craig Williams’s mount Sagaronne in barrier four and out to improve on a sixth in the Thousand Guineas.

Her other Group 1 run to date was as a two-year-old in Brisbane when she ran under a length away second behind Chris Waller’s subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner Press Statement in the JJ Atkins over the Doomben mile.
