Winning jockey Mark Zahra took the Darren Weir trained colt straight to the front in the seven horses field and copied Craig Williams winning ride in the first race when he led all of the way on Andrioli to win the $100,000 Yelowglen Plate (1400m).

Mahuta was a drifter in the betting from $13 to start at the nice odds of $19 and was able to hold off the determined effort of runner up Holler ($4.60) by a neck with third placegetter Flying Light ($11) a further three and three quarter lengths away.

The Lee and Anthony Freedman trained Santa Ana Lane was sent out the $22.50 favourite but never threatened to run fourth.

“I jumped quick and I didn’t want to fight him. He was relaxed there and we got away with it and he did a good kick and he lasted,” Zahra said.

Zahra was quick to congratulate Weir and said he turns his horses out in fine order every day.

“He has them hard, fit and that have got that will to win and that’s what happened today,” Zahra said.

Winning part owner Leigh Saville led the cheers from a huge band of owners and was ecstatic to get a good horse after having horses with Weir for fifteen years.

“He is a beauty Weiry and he looks after us a treat and we really love being part of is stable,” Saville said.

“We’ve had horses with Darren for about fifteen years.”

Mahuta will now head towards the Group 3 $200,000 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on October 31 and then possibly onto the Group 2 $250,000 Sandown Guineas (1600m) at Sandown on November 14.

“Depending on how he pulls up of course but the Carbine Club and perhaps even the Sandown Guineas if he can stay up for that long,” Saville said.

“It is only his first prep and we will give him plenty of time and see what happens.”
