Dawnie Perfect came to Caulfield today without a win from six race starts but goes home a genuine contender for the Group 1 $1m Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington on November 5.

Winning trainer Clarry Conners was represented by his son Marc who said the Big Brown filly will followthe traditional Oaks path and line up in the Group 2 $300,000 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 31.

“She will go around in the Wakeful I am sure,” Marc Conners said.

“It was a good effort today. She sat wide and was still able to stick it out at the finish,” Conners said.

“She came down here at the right time of the year, she has hit the right 2000m race today and she will improve again.”

Winning jockey Jim Cassidy settled Dawnie Perfect ($26) in the second half of the field and had the last shot at the two fancy runners to claim the lead from runner up Honesta ($3.50) close to the line with $2.70 favourite Ambience fighting on solidly for third.

“She had a good prep coming down. She was a maidener heading towards the Oaks,” Cassidy said.

“Clarry was very confident this morning that she would run the trip. We were three deep with cover, relaxed and found the line. A good win.

Cassidy won the 2012 Crown Oaks for owner John Singleton and Conners and the veteran jockey gives them another great chance to claim the winning trophy again.

“Singo has been solid. I won an Oaks for him on Dear Demi a couple of years ago so she will run the trip and we are going into it now able to win.”
