A talented line-up of staying types make up the field for Saturday’s David Jones Cup 2015, betting tips for the Caulfield Cup Day support act detailed below.
There are 10 in the mix for Caulfield Race 6 with the $150,000 Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m) due to jump at 3:45pm (AEST).
While the event just misses out on the exclusive 50% Extra on offer for punters on Races 1 – 5 for their very first Fixed Odds winner at Ladbrokes.com.au, the David Jones Cup is part of Best Tote or SP + 20% markets on every Caulfield race this Saturday!
Leading the latest David Jones Cup odds at $3.60 is the Darren Weir-trained 59kg top weight Stratum Star drawn a treat in barrier two and coming off a brave third in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at the track last Saturday.
Before that the Stratum four-year-old won the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on the back of his third in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in late August.
After three Group 1 Caulfield top three runs on the trot, he’ll appreciate the drop down in class this Saturday at a track he’s got flying form at and looks the one to beat even with the extra 2kg on his 57kgs in the Toorak last time out.
If Stratum Star doesn’t handle the kilos or the short back-up, the bookies have the best fancied to beat him as Stocks Stakes winning Group 1 champion mare Fenway ($4.40), Chris Waller’s High Chaparral four-year-old Sadler’s Lake ($4.60) coming off a ninth in the Epsom Handicap in Sydney and Lindsay Park import Dibayani ($6) who is unlikely to get a run in the Caulfield Cup as the third emergency at the meeting.
So will the best in betting be the same in the David Jones Cup result or is there value further down the markets from the likes of early market mover Leebaz ($15 into $11) for Team Hawkes?
#5 Fenway ($4.40)
Loved the last start Moonee Valley win of Lee & Shannon Hope’s smart four-year-old mare Fenway, the daughter of High Chaparral beating a nice field of fellow female gallopers in the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m). She takes on the boys here but has the class to do it after her outstanding three-year-old season that included a Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) win in Sydney and a second in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) in Adelaide. She is back up to that distance this weekend for the first time this prep and will appreciate the extra metres looking to add to her top 2000m record (3-1-1-1). Will get a gun run from barrier five and Blake Shinn retains the ride. She also drops back from 56.5kg to 56kg and will be tough to hold out.
#1 Stratum Star ($3.60)
Deserving favourite, but is on the short seven day turnaround going up two kilos to 59kg so gives a big of weight away to his rivals here. That said, this Group 3 looks a very achievable race for the Group 1 Sir Rupert winner who has had three elite level runs on the trot at the track. Gets the run of the race from barrier two and was a good second just a nose off the winner in the Group 2 Alister Clark in March at his only other look at this distance. It’s an open race and he’s the class runner there to be beaten with those kilos.
#9 Velox ($13)
Adding a bit of value is this in-form David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained six-year-old who comes off a good third in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) at Moonee Valley from October 2. Gets in on the same 54kg lightweight and Craig Williams is booked for the ride. Yet to race at Caulfield but the distance suits (3-0-1-1), weight is right, has winning form up to 1650 and is an import on the up-and-up with Place claims in this.
