The bookmakers are having a hard time separating the chances of the top two in betting for the last on Wednesday’s Caulfield card, the italktravel Stakes 2015 with Dothraki and Kaepernick sharing favouritism in the markets.
Closing the Blue Sapphire Stakes Day card in Melbourne’s feature mid-week meeting, Wednesday’s $120,000 Listed italktravel Stakes (1200m) features a field of 14 hopefuls facing off in the handicap sprint.
Leading betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the day’s feature race the Blue Sapphire, are Peter & Paul Snowden’s market mover Dothraki and the Team Hawkes-trained Kaepernick both at $5.50 for the win.
Drawn in gate eight, Mossman five-year-old Dothraki carries 58.5kg first-up having last been seen running fifth to Haussmann in the Listed Civic Stakes (1350m) in the wet in Sydney on July 4.
Before that he won the Group 3 WJ Healy (1200m) at the Gold Coast, and shoots for his first first-up win at his seventh attempt with the big weight this week.
Fastnet Rock four-year-old Kaepernick meanwhile gets in on the 54kg lightweight on Wednesday, Dwayne Dunn booked to ride the ultra-consistent gelding from a gun barrier two draw over a distance he’s got an ace record of three wins and three seconds from seven starts over to date.
Last time out he beat home Galaxy Pegasus with Dunn aboard over 1200m at Moonee Valley on October 2 carrying 57kg, so with the light weight over the same distance in the italktravel Stakes he looks a livewire hope to handle the tougher company.
It is an open market for the showdown with four other single figure fancies including Fast ‘N’ Rocking ($7) carrying 57kg and Java ($8) drawn the outside alley in gate 14 for jockey Ben Melham to overcome.
The David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Fast ‘N’ Rocking is right down in class on the back of a barve seventh to Stratum Star in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at the track on September 26 when defeated only one and three-quarter lengths.
Lee & Anthony Freedman’s Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old Java comes off a nice first-up third at Caulfield when under a length off Fell Swoop in the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1200m) on September 19.
Also paying $8 is the returning John O’Shea-trained Lonhro four-year-old Sarajevo ($8) whose last start was a fourth in Doomben’s Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) during the winter before Robbie Griffiths’ Group 1 performer The Quarterback ($9) rounds out the hopes under $10 in the markets.
At more generous odds are other notable hopes including the Robert Smerdon-trained six-year-old Mr Utopia ($10) and the rails-draw Galaxy Pegasus ($11) coming off the second to Kaepernick at the Valley.
