Ron Quinton’s last start Group 2 winner Peeping is the early favourite to make it back-to-back Sydney victories when she takes to the Royal Randwick track on Spring Champion Stakes Day in the Angst Stakes 2015.
Due to run as Randwick Race 7 at 4:50pm (AEST) on Saturday afternoon, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 McGrath Estate Agents Angst Stakes (1600m) has attracted a 15 starter field of mares.
Peeping carries the number one saddlecloth and is drawn in gate 10 for jockey Sam Clipperton, the four-year-old daughter of Redoute’s Choice coming off a Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) win at Rosehill from September 26.
She has a solid Randwick record (4-1-2-0), but is yet to be extended out to 1600m and how she handles the mile will be key to whether she can salute for the punters leading the Angst Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at an opening quote of $4.
There are four other single figure hopes in the current Angst Stakes betting markets including Wine Tales ($7) and Berry Delicious ($7) at the same price, but drawn at opposite ends of the field in barriers four and 13 respectively.
Sydney’s premier horseman Chris Waller prepares Tale Of The Cat four-year-old Wine Tales who hasn’t won a race since October last year and is out to improve on an eighth last time out over 1400m at Rosehill.
Berry Delicious has better lead-up form having last been seen running two lengths away third to Peeping, who she faces again on Saturday, in the Golden Pendant that could prove the form line to follow into the Angst Stakes this season.
Along with Wine Tales, Waller is also represented by Ballet Suite ($7.50) out in barrier 12 with Jason Collett in the saddle of the High Chaparral mare who ran fifth to Music Magnate in a Benchmark 85 in late September.
She has Group 1 form and is a dual winner at Randwick from four attempts, and is also undefeated over the mile with two wins from as many 1600m starts to date.
The last of the hopes under $10 for the Angst Stakes victory is Vergara ($9) drawn a treat in gate two with Brenton Avdulla booked to ride Anthony Cummings’ daughter of Snippetson.
The five-year-old ran fifth in the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle two back before her Golden Pendant fourth as a 21/1 shot last month leading up to Saturday.
Other notable Angst Stakes hopefuls at more generous odds include early market mover Supara ($12 into $11) for Gai Waterhouse, Cummings’ other runner Skyline Blush ($13) who comes off a seventh to Silverball in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) from September 12 so is dropping back in distance for this and the James Cummings-trained Hussonet four-year-old Zarzali ($15) who ran fifth to Winx in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) in Brisbane last season.
