This Saturday at Caulfield Racecourse there are four Group 1 features on the program including the Caulfield Stakes 2015 featuring a field full of Cox Plate hopefuls.
Set to run as Caulfield Race 6 at 3:55pm (AEST), this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Stakes (2000m) has attracted just eight weight-for-age hopefuls.
Among the final acceptors is the current top fancy for Moonee Valley’s Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 24, the Chris Waller-trained Kermadec who pays $4.80 through Ladbrokes.com.au in futures Cox Plate betting.
A dual Group 1 winner over the Randwick mile after his last start victory in the George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 16, the four-year-old Teofilo stallion is yet to run at Caulfield but is on track for the weekend that will also be his maiden start over further than 1600m.
Kermadec is drawn in the outside barrier eight, which last produced a Caulfield Stakes winner in Whobegotyou (2009), with Glen Boss back in the saddle shooting for his third win in the classic after victories aboard Sky Heights (2000) and Ocean Park (2012).
The next best fancied in the Cox Plate odds accepted for the Caulfield Stakes this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is the John O’Shea-trained Contributer with the rails run from barrier one with Blake Shinn in the saddle.
A $15 Cox Plate chance, Godolphin’s High Chaparral six-year-old is looking for his first win since the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill back in March and was last seen crossing sixth in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 26.
Criterion ($17) is the other most notable Cox Plate-bound galloper in the Caulfield Stakes field, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained son of Sebring last seen running sixth in Europe’s Group 1 Juddmonte Stakes (2092m) on August 19.
The defending Caulfield Stakes winner Fawkner is also in the mix looking to become the first back-to-back winner of the race since the mighty Lonhro (2002-2003).
Robert Hickmott’s evergreen eight-year-old won last year’s Caulfield Stakes on the back of a Makybe Diva Stakes second, a race he won this year before his last start second in the Underwood.
Rounding out the Caulfield Stakes field and barriers this season are the Paul Beshara-trained Happy Trails (6) who hasn’t won a race since the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington last November, Gai Waterhouse’s Doomben Cup champ Pornichet (3) coming off a George Main third to Kermadec, Entirely Platinum (5) for Team Hawkes who has run second in three of his four previous runs at Caulfield and the Murray Baker-trained Kiwi visitor Mongolian Khan (2).
A winner of seven of his 11 starts to date including the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m) in Sydney during the autumn, Holy Roman Emperor four-year-old Mongolian Khan has had two runs this time in including a fourth in the Underwoopd that he could improve on over the extra metres this weekend.
