Peter Moody has been pleased with the class displayed by Bassett through a short racing career, and is confident the three-year-old is up to the task of delivering a handy field defeat in Saturday’s featured Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
Bassett debuted to racing for success in the Listen, Learn, Speak Handicap (1100m) at Caulfield on May 16th; a performance that warranted a berth in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) in only his second competitive appearance on June 6th.
Having been far from disgraced when running on for a credible fifth, Bassett was immediately returned to the paddock; and picked up in style this time when savaging the line for a comfortable win in the National Jockeys Trust Plate (1100m) on September 19th.
While conceding the colt faces a big test in stepping up to 1600m for the 2015 Caulfield Guineas, Moody has identified JJ Atkins winner Press Statement as the field’s leader but believes Bassett is more than capable of a big performance.
“It’s a long way from an ideal preparation going from 1100 to a mile (1600m) in three weeks but he’s in good shape and has worked strongly,” Moody told Racing Victoria.
“He’s had three or four good gallops since his last run and we did the same thing with him in the winter and he was very competitive with Press Statement. He didn’t have a lot of luck up there and the bonus here is he has only got to go outside of his back door to do it this time.
“It’s a big ask but he’s a very talented young horse and he’s not heavy, he’s quite athletic and that will help his task.
“Had there been five or six top colts it might have made me forget the Guineas but other than Press Statement there doesn’t look to be a standout and you’ve probably got to give him his chance.”
Bassett was allocated barrier 5 for the 2015 Caulfield Guineas, and has been confirmed to be partnered by Daniel Stackhouse.
Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 Caulfield Guineas odds, for which Bassett can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $13 for success, or $3.90 for a first three finish.
