Myer Classic an Option for Blazer Stakes Winner La Passe

Master trainer Darren Weir has produced another impressive mare in La Passe, who delivered a particularly talented field an upset defeat in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington this afternoon.

La Passe was given little chance for success as a rank $41 outsider in the 2015 Blazer Stakes, but jockey Michelle Payne gave the mare a great opportunity to post a maiden black type win when steering the five-year-old forward from the gates and settling in prime position within the field.

Enjoying a faultless run in transit, Payne elected to peel the mare off the fence rounding onto the final straight, and while appearing to have a huge task in catching lead pair Hazard and Tycoon Tara, mustered an impressive turn of foot to secure a sixth career win in only her 13th competitive start.

Weir was thrilled with the performances of both horse and jockey, and revealed he may considering stepping the mare up to a mile and target a race like the Group 1 Myer Classic following this afternoon’s success.

“She’s had a really good prep,” Weir said after the race.

“We sort of just threw her in the deep end just chasing a bit of black type because she’s a multiple city winner now.

“I said to Michelle just go out and try and ride her to get a place and she rode her beautiful.

“The owners are breeders so it was important for her breeding to get her a Group 2 win, and who knows from here.”

Payne produced a classy ride aboard La Passe in the 2015 Blazer Stakes and was quick to lay all the praise on the skill of the five-year-old and training efforts of Weir.

“It’s a huge thrill. The plan was to get a little black type with her today,” Payne said.

“She landed in a beautiful position, she’s the sweetest ride, she just travelled beautiful where she landed.

“We didn’t have a lot of room coming into the straight and she took a nice tight gap.

“As soon as I gave her a couple behind the saddle she really extended for me and was great to the line.

“You see it time and time again with Darren Weir’s horses they can hold their form and she was great today.”
