Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Godolphin’s head trainer John O’Shea confirmed plans to continue to step up the distance for this weekend’s impressive Dulcify Quality 2015 winning filly Ambience who beat home the boys with ease at Royal Randwick on Epsom Handicap Day.
A Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival raid is now calling the progressive three-year-old daughter of Street Cry after the nicely-bred half-sister of five-time Group 1 winning super stallion Pierro lived up to her pedigree with a black-type victory in the $100,000 Listed Dulcify Quality (1600m).
Ridden by James McDonald, who also rode the winner of the last for O’Shea aboard Gimcrack Stakes champion Calliope, Ambience made a very nice progression from a maiden win at Kembla Grange over 1400m on September 12 into the Listed Dulcify on a big Saturday race meeting.
It was the Tommy Berry-ridden Cracklin’ Rosie leading the Dulcify field around this season who set a solid tempo up front ahead of the Chris Waller-trained favourite Wudang Mountain in second, More Than Fabulous tracking third and Land’s End in fourth throughout.
The steady speed held as Cracklin’ Rosie led them into the turn, while the Gerald Ryan-trained multiple Group 3 performer Land’s End peeled out three deep making a charge.
In a perfectly timed ride from the always composed McDonald, Ambience ($3.60) arrived on the scene in the straight rolling up to them on the outside chasing down Land’s End and the favourite to snare the front and race off for a big win.
She had a notable margin over Waller’s Spring Stakes fourth placed colt Wudang Mountain ($3.40), who kicked back for second, on the line with Land’s End ($10) crossing third to finish off the trifecta.
McDonald found the box seat with Ambience, the three-year-old filly cruising up to her rivals to put the gap on them, getting on with the job and showing she was getting better and better as the distances are increased for her.
“She’s always shown a good amount of ability,” McDonald told the media post-win.
“She won with a bit of authority today.
“She got a bit keen through the mid-stages, but she’s beautifully bred.”
A representative for Godolphin confirmed her impeccable breeding led them to think she was always going to make a nice staying type from early on.
“She’s never run a bad race,” former champion jockey Darren Beadman said.
“She’s got staying potential written all over her.
“Knowing John (O’Shea) he’ll look for something like the Wakeful (Stakes) with her, which looks the right kind of race.
“She’s a very casual filly and she doesn’t get herself too worked up.
“She also works with the rider and that’s what you need with a staying filly.
“There’s staying bloodlines on both sides (of her breeding).”
The $300,000 Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) runs at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, October 31, on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival and could lead into a $1 million Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) assignment over even further on November 5.
O’Shea confirmed that was the path they were taking and described her Sydney win as “important.”
“That was an important win because she’s got the pedigree and now she’s got the black type,” he said.
“We’ll give consideration to how she pulls up but we’ve always thought the 2000 metres or maybe a bit further would suit her.
“That’s always been the intention (to take her to Melbourne).”
