The classy mares face off at Moonee Valley in tonight’s Stocks Stakes 2015 as part of Moir Stakes Night with betting tips for the mile showdown found right here.
There are just seven in the mix for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 StrathAyr Track Stocks Stakes (1600m) that runs as Race 3 at 7:45pm (AEST) and is a lead-up to the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on October 31 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Leading the latest Stocks Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, home of the spring’s best racing offers and promos, is the market mover May’s Dream ($2.80) who has firmed right in from $3.60.
Brad Rawiller rides the Darren Weir-trained daughter of New Approach, the now five-year-old best known for her 2014 Group 1 Schweppes Oaks win as a three-year-old in Adelaide.
She comes off a nice third to Amicus in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) three weeks ago and drops from 58kg that run to 57kg tonight under the weight-for-age conditions of the Stocks Stakes.
In the wide open market the next best fancied are another Group 1 winner in Amanpour ($4) drawn the rails this time round and the progressive Sardaaj ($4.80) for Team Hawkes who is in black-type company for the first time since a Group 1 second over the mile in New Zealand back in January.
So can the firming favourite salute for the punters or is there an upset Stocks Stakes result on the Moonee Valley card tonight?
#2 May’s Dream ($2.80)
The money is all on May’s Dream to return to winning form third-up off some nice runs including being beaten under half a length in the Let’s Elope, and we’re happy to follow that money trail. She’s proven up to 2000m so the mile three runs in off a fast finishing third over 1400m makes her look hard to beat here. She’s set to peak and has the Group 1 form as a three-year-old proving her class.
#4 Precious Gem ($7.50)
Wide open market full of livewire hopes including this Gwenda Johnstone-trained six-year-old who comes off a Let’s Elope second, the form of that race we’re backing to stack up here, where she only just missed out on the prize. She has a gun record over this Moonee Valley mile (5-2-1-0) and will appreciate getting back up to the distance for the first time since late March when fourth here in the Group 2 Sunline Stakes.
#1 Amanpour ($4)
Gai Waterhouse’s daughter of Northern Meteor hasn’t won since the autumn when she became a Group1 champ over the Randwick mile in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes. She’s had two unplaced runs this time in but will be better over the 1600m on the short back-up from last Saturday when sixth in the Golden Pendant. Races in Melbourne for the first time since last November when third in Group 2 company. Her first look at the tight Moonee Valley track but has class and on her day can beat a lot of these home for a place at worst.
