The JRA Cup 2015 is one of the Group race features at Moonee Valley Racecourse tonight under the lights for the Moir Stakes meeting in Melbourne, betting tips for the handicap clash found below.
Ten remain in the mix for this year’s $200,000 Group 3 The Cup Club JRA Cup (2040m) after the early withdrawal of Extra Zero for David Hayes & Tom Dabernig and the Paul Jones-trained Mujadale.
Of the runners still in the field and markets the best fancied at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.10 is the market mover The United States drawn a treat in barrier three with Damian Lane booked for the ride.
The Robert Hickmott-trained import has won four from 10 including one from three at Moonee Valley where he also ran second over the mile on September 5 before finishing a very close runner-up to Magnapal in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield a fortnight ago.
His main dangers in this clash are the ultra-consistent Robert Smerdon five-year-old Genuine Lad ($4.60) coming off a third in the Naturalism and his last start conqueror Magnapal ($5) who chases four wins on the trot this campaign but his first from four runs at the Valley.
So do you follow the JRA Cup betting markets tonight when placing your bets on one of the major lead-up races to the Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup or look for value further down the odds from the likes of the 58.5kg top weight Prince Of Penzance ($9) or even dual third placegetter at the track Desert Jeuney ($16)?
#5 The United States ($3.10)
Galileo stallion The United States is a six-year-old but only lightly raced boasting a top record of four wins, two seconds and a third from 10 starts. He’s got a solid Moonee Valley record (3-1-1-1) yet to finish out of the money at the track and it is the same story over the distance (2-1-1-0). He won over 1500m here back in August before back-to-back seconds including in the Naturalism where he just missed out after a strong finish. Carried 54kg that day and goes up to 55.5kg but his last start winner Magnapal is worse in the weights this time (54kg to 57kg).
#3 Magnapal ($5)
No doubt Magnapal is on track for a solid run in better company, maybe even the Caulfield Cup over the mile and a half after earning the ballot exemption in the Naturalism. He is right on point with three wins on the trot this prep including back-to-back black types at Caulfield, but his record at Moonee Valley isn’t great as he’s failed to finish in the money in any of his three starts here. Also gets a weight disadvantage this time on Naturalism runner-up The United States, but can still run a good race.
#8 Digitalism ($19)
Big odds on this John Sadler-trained six-year-old who is up in class after a win at this track and distance from September 5. He has a brilliant Moonee Valley record (8-4-1-1) and that is important at this notoriously tricky course. Set to get a gun run from barrier two and incredibly this is his first stakes assignment at career start number 38.
