Roman Consul Stakes 2015 Betting: Exosphere Odds-On

Melbourne-bound Group 1 winning three-year-old Exosphere is the odds-on favourite in the 2015 Roman Consul Stakes betting markets for the Epsom Handicap Day sprint at Randwick Racecourse on Saturday.

Prepared by Godolphin’s head trainer John O’Shea the in-form son of Lonhro has won four of his six career starts, most famously the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill three weeks ago, and is the one to beat in the $300,000 Group 2 Canterbury BMW Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) this weekend.

He killed that classic by two and a quarter lengths and is back after more turf success this weekend at Randwick where he is yet to run under race conditions.

Exosphere could head to Melbourne after Saturday and take on the older horses in spring features including the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley, and pays a very short $1.50 to get the job done through in the Roman Consul Stakes odds.

Two of his 10 rivals are also under double figures for the win with the consistent Chris Waller-trained Japonisme ($5.50) and stablemate Counterattack ($8) drawn well in barrier two for hoop Jim Cassidy.

A winner of four on the trot earlier this year, Choisir gelding Japonisme’s last run was a fourth to Exosphere in the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m), Waller opting to bypass the Golden Rose in favour of a freshen-up.

Now he returns for his Randwick debut in the Roman Consul on way to a possible October 31 run at Flemington in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Stablemate Counterattack is a nicely-bred Redoute’s Choice colt who comes off a win at the track having taken out the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) in the wet on September 19 with Cassidy aboard for the one and a half-length triumph.

The next best in betting representing the value in the markets for the set weights clash is the Gary Moore-trained Startum gelding Takedown ($16), the dual Group 3 winner coming off a Heritage Stakes third to Counterattack, before the rest of the field can be found at $26 or above including the big market mover Sooboog on the rails for jockey Tommy Berry.

Sooboog has been smashed early for the upset Roman Consul Stakes result, the Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Snitzel colt coming off back-to-back Sydney wins including at Rosehill on September 30 with Berry aboard.
