Exosphere Tops 2015 Roman Consul Stakes Field

The Godolphin-raced Golden Rose winner Exosphere is the headline final acceptor for the Roman Consul Stakes 2015 field in Sydney this weekend on Epsom Handicap Day.

Due to jump as Randwick Race 4 at 2:10pm (AEST) on Saturday, this year’s $300,000 Group 2 Canterbury BMW Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) has attracted a final field of 11 three-year-olds including John O’Shea’s in-form Group 1 champ Exosphere.

The nicely-bred Lonhro colt won the Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) in late February before failing to beat home any other runner crossing 16th in the Golden Slipper.

He atoned for that first-up this prep with a Run To The Rose win over JJ Atkins winner Press Statement and then winning the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) on September 12.

Saturday he shoots for another win to keep his perfect record this prep intact in his maiden Randwick run from a nice barrier three draw with his Golden Rose winning hoop James McDonald retaining the ride.

Along with Exosphere the Roman Consul Stakes field features five other last start winners including the undefeated Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel colt Spill The Beans, Joe Pride’s progressive son of Sebring Yaboroo and the Chris Waller-trained Counterattack.

Jumping from barrier two with Jim Cassidy in the saddle on Saturday, Redoute’s Choice colt Counterattack comes off a black-type win at the track from September 19 when beating home Haptic by one and a half lengths in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) in the wet.

That was his third run at Randwick where he has also run second on two occasions leading into his tough assignment on the weekend.

Other notable Roman Consul Stakes hopefuls this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival include January’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Le Chef, multiple Group 3 winning Stratum gelding Takedown and Waller’s other runner Japonisme.

Heading towards the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in Melbourne on October 31, Japonisme won four on the trot including the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) in Sydney earlier this campaign before his Run To The Rose fourth.

Waller turned him out, bypassing the Golden Rose, for a freshen-up after that and brings him back on Saturday with an eye on a Group 1 sprint win for the Choisir gelding during the Cup Carnival.
