Don’t Doubt Mamma Leads 2015 Edward Manifold Stakes Field

Tony McEvoy’s Thousand Guineas fancy Don’t Doubt Mamma is the headline final acceptor for the Edward Manifold Stakes 2015 field at Flemington Racecourse this Sunday in Melbourne.

The Adelaide-trained Not A Single Doubt filly is one of a capacity 16 three-year-old female gallopers in the mix for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 TAB Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) that is due to jump as Race 5 at 2:50pm (AEST) on the Turnbull Stakes Day program.

Drawn ideally in barrier five for Luke Currie to ride, Don’t Doubt Mamma ran fourth in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley two back before posting her second win from six starts over 1400m at Caulfield a fortnight ago.

She’s back up in class this weekend but in peak fitness with the bookies at Ladbrokes.com.au only offering $8 for her to win the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) Saturday week at Caulfield.

The last Edward Manifold Stakes graduate to back-up and win the Thousand Guineas was Commanding Jewel (3rd in 2012).

Runner-up to Don’t Doubt Mamma in the Caulfield race last start, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained daughter of High Chaparral Sacred Eye is also accepted for an Edward Manifold rematch this weekend.

She is yet to race in black-type company but won by over three lengths at Geelong on debut over 1300m at the start of last month and was only beaten a half-length last time out.

Sacred Eye gets the run of the race from barrier one on Sunday and is joined in the field by stablemate Air Apparent drawn at the opposite end in gate 11, the Snitzel filly shooting for back-to-back wins after success at Benalla over 1406m on September 15.

Also coming off good lead-up runs are the likes of the Mick Price-trained Sailing By who is yet to finish out of the money and who ran second to 2015 Victoria Derby fancy Tarzino over the Caulfield mile on September 19, last start winning stablemate Badawiya and the lightly-raced Thames Court for David Brideoake who was third past the post to Don’t Doubt Mamma two weeks ago.

Robert Smerdon’s black-type winner at the track on Anzac Day My Poppette meanwhile is out to atone for a seventh to Miss Gunpowder in the Group 2 Tranquil Star (1400m) only last Saturday so is on the short back-up in her first mile showdown.

Other notable hopes include Group 3 Adelaide Sires’ Produce Stakes winner The Grey Flash who will be fitter after a first up failure at Flemington behind super filly Petits Filous from three weeks ago, the improving Matt Laurie-trained Pearl Star and the returning John Sadler-trained Bengal Cat who has had two previous runs at the track from the winter for a win (1400m) and close fourth (1600m).
