Hazard Heads 2015 Blazer Stakes Nominations

The Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Hazard is the top rated mare nominated for the Blazer Stakes 2015 on Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington Racecourse this Sunday over a bumper long weekend of racing.

The ninth race on a massive line-up in Melbourne, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) attracted a total of 19 nominations on Monday including Flying Spur six-year-old Hazard.

Hazard hasn’t won a race since early June in Brisbane when beating home the super-consistent Catkins in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m).

This time in she has had two runs at Caulfield for a Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) second and then a mid-field finish when still only beaten one and a half lengths when running seventh to Politeness in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) on September 19.

Hazard, like the majority of the Blazer Stakes entries this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, has an eye on a run back at the track over the mile on Victoria Derby Day (October 31) in the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).

Team Freedman have also nominated for Lucky Lago who won at Sandown-Lakeside two back before a disappointing dead last when 13th in a BM90 for mares over 1400m a fortnight back.

Winner of that race at Caulfield was the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained daughter of Snitzel Kayjay’s Joy who is also nominated for the Blazer Stakes where she’ll shoot for her third win in four starts at her maiden Flemington start if accepted.

The other Hayes & Dabernig-trained Blazer Stakes entry this year is Girl Guide, the six-year-old out to atone for two eighth place runs in the Cockram and How Now Stakes when beaten under two lengths both times.

Along with Kayjay’s Joy the other last start winners nominated for the Blazer this weekend are the returning Brian Cox-trained Minnie Downs who won the Swan Hill Cup over the mile from a wide barrier last time out and the Colin & Cindy Alderson-trained four-year-old Manageress who saluted over 2000m at Flemington on August 8 by two lengths.

Other mares coming off nice lead-up form include How Now Stakes third placegetter Jessy Belle prepared by Caulfield’s Luke Oliver, the Michael Kent-trained Danestroem who ran second to Kayjay’s Joy defeated only a neck on September 19, the Ciaron Maher-trained improver Azkadellia and the Darren Weir-trained veteran seven-year-old Atlantis Dream.

Winner of the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) in Adelaide back in the winter, Atlantis Dream returned to run fifth in the How Now Stakes crossing just a length off the winner when carrying 58kg, a kilo more than her Blazer Stakes weight this weekend.

See below for the full Blazer Stakes 2015 nominations and weights, the final field and barriers out on Wednesday so stay tuned.
