2015 Craven Plate Nominations Feature Royal Descent

Group 1 winning mare Royal Descent is the top rated Craven Plate 2015 nomination taken for the Epsom Handicap Day showdown in Sydney on Saturday, but is more likely to head to Melbourne on Sunday on way to the Caulfield Cup.

The six-year-old daughter of Redoute’s Choice took out the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) in Sydney as a filly back in 2013 and didn’t win again until her successful first-up effort this season in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on August 22.

She has run in the money twice since including her brave second to stablemate Kermadec in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) over the Randwick mile.

Now her trainer Chris Waller is weighing up his options with the $2.6 million earner, Sydney’s premier horseman throwing in a nomination for the weight-for-age $125,000 Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) that he won last year with Moriarty (2014).

He is leaning towards sending her to Melbourne for the feature race a day later however, Royal Descent to take part in the $500,000 Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) ahead of an October 17 run in the $3 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) that she pays $41 through Ladbrokes.com.au to win.

Along with Royal Descent, Waller has a bumper 10 other Craven Plate nominees this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

Many are unlikely accepted with the Sydney Group 1 races and trips to Melbourne calling including his Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) winning Zabeel four-year-old Preferment who is also Turnbull Stakes bound and Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) accepted Silverball.

Aside from the Waller contingent the other highest rated Craven Plate entry this season is the John O’Shea-trained Complacent.

Runner-up in the 2013 Victoria Derby before spending over a year on the sidelines, the now five-year-old Authorized stallion has had three runs this preparation including an upset win as a 31/1 shot in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 5.

His latest run was a third to Preferment in the Hill Stakes when beaten only a length, the Godolphin galloper rated a $26 chance in the all-in Caulfield Cup odds and $34 for the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) a week later at Moonee Valley that is also still on the cards.

O’Shea also has Hauraki nominated for the Craven Plate, the four-year-old son of Reset looking to return to his three-year-old form from the autumn when runner-up in the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m).

Other noteworthy Craven Plate nominees include Robert Hickmott’s last start Morphettville winner over 1800m Amralah and the James Cummings-trained improving Medaglia D’Oro four-year-old Ruling Dynasty in his first black-type test since an ATC Derby sixth back in April.
