2015 Roman Consul Stakes Feature Golden Rose Winner

Godolphin’s Golden Rose winning colt Exosphere is a dual nominee on the Epsom Handicap Day program in Sydney on Saturday holding an entry for two races including the Roman Consul Stakes 2015.

Also in the mix for the $300,000 Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at weight-for-age against the older horses at Royal Randwick this weekend, Lonhro three-year-old Exosphere is the top-rated of his age nominated for the $300,000 Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m).

Nominations for the set weights sprint are extended until 11am (AEST) on Tuesday morning with 14 three-year-olds currently in the mix for this year’s Roman Consul Stakes for youngsters eyeing a Melbourne run in the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 31.

Last year the Chris Waller-trained Brazen Beau (2014) completed the double and in 2015 O’Shea could have a livewire hope of repeating the feat with Exosphere having won four of his six starts to date ahead of his Randwick debut this weekend.

O’Shea also has Holler in the mix for, the Commands colt having run third to his star stablemate in the Group 2 The Run To The Rose (1200m) in late August before a dead last when eighth in the Group 1 on September 12.

Last year’s Roman Consul Stakes winning trainer Waller also has two entries this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival with Counterattack and Japonisme.

Redoute’s Choice colt Counterattack comes off a black-type win at the track when beating home Haptic by a length and a half on September 19 in the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) run on a Heavy (8) course.

Japonisme meanwhile is a son of Choisir who won four on the trot including the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1200m) in mid-August before a fourth of five runners in the Run To The Rose after which Waller sent him for a short freshen-up ahead of his Roman Consul return.

Along with Counterattack and Exosphere the other last start winners nominated for the Roman Consul are Snitzel colt Sooboog for Team Hawkes coming off a Canterbury success in early September, the consistent Joe Pride-trained son of Sebring Yaboroo who is yet to run out of the top two, and the returning duo of Spill The Beans and Surfin’ Safari.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Spill The Beans is another nicely-bred Snitzel colt who is undefeated with wins at Gosford and Randwick over Yaboroo from the winter while Surfin’ Safari is prepared at Newcastle by Paul Perry and has won four of his six starts to date.

Other notable Roman Consul Stakes nominations include Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner from January Le Chef and the Gary Portelli-trained Sebring Sun.

Sebring Sun won the Listed Rosebud (1200m) at Randwick before a third at the track to Shards on August 22 in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m).

His latest run was in the Golden Rose when running a brave third to the horse he could face off against again this Saturday when returning to a track he’s got a solid record over (5-1-1-2).
