Twenty fillies make up the nominations for this year’s Edward Manifold Stakes 2015 that runs at Flemington Racecourse on Sunday as part of the Turnbull Stakes Day action.
A set weights race for three-year-old fillies, the $200,000 Group 2 TAB Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) is a lead-up to a number of Group 1 features during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival including a possible six day back-up into Saturday week’s $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.
The Edward Manifold Stakes has produced four Thousand Guineas winners in the past 10 years, most recently Commanding Jewel (2012) who ran third in the lead-up before atoning in the Group 1 next start.
This spring the shortest priced Edward Manifold Stakes nominated filly in the all-in Thousand Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, which are led by Stay With Me ($4.80) and Pasadena Girl ($5), is Don’t Doubt Mamma ($8).
Tony McEvoy’s Not A Single Doubt filly from Adelaide ran fourth to Stay With Me in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley before a 1400m win when up in distance at Caulfield on September 19 she’ll be out to repeat this Sunday if accepted.
The next best fancied in the futures Thousand Guineas betting markets who could run on Sunday over the Flemington mile are Sacred Eye ($11) and Badawiya ($13).
David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s lightly-raced High Chaparral filly Sacred Eye has had just the two runs to date for a win on the Geelong synthetic on September 1 and then a second to Don’t Doubt Mamma last start defeated a half-length.
Hayes & Dabernig have a total of three Edward Manifold nominees this season with Sacred Eye joined by last start Benalla winning Snitzel filly Air Apparent who is a Group 3 runner-up and Dawn Of Hope who ran third at Bendigo on debut over 1300m.
Badawiya is a Mick Price-trained daughter of Al Maher who has won two of her five runs to date, improving on an Atlantic Jewel Stakes seventh two back to win at Pakenham over 1400m on September 23.
The Caulfield-based Price also has Sailing By in the mix, the Fastnet Rock filly yet to run out of the top three including a last start second to 2015 Caulfield Guineas bound stablemate Tarzino over the Caulfield mile on September 16.
Other notable Edward Manifold Stakes entries this year include Robert Smerdon’s recent mile winning Commands filly Dulverton, stablemate My Poppette looking to return to her black type winning form at Flemington from ANZAC Day in late April and Lazumba who was runner-up to Jameka in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) back in March.
