Prelude Winner Bon Aurum onto Caulfield Guineas 2015

Local Caulfield horseman Ciaron Maher has uncovered a livewire chance for the Caulfield Guineas 2015 in a fortnight with his progressive colt Bon Aurum backing up from a tough Flemington win to take out the Caulfield Guineas Prelude on Underwood Stakes Day.

On September 12 the Bon Hoffa colt put in a massive effort from a wide barrier 13 of 16 draw from which he got caught wide but still fought on strongly in the Listed Exford Plate (1400m) to win by three quarters of a length in his black-type debut.

On the back of that he returned home for his first official run at Caulfield Racecourse in another 16-starter field for the $175,000 Group 3 BECK Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).

Again the tough colt was drawn awkwardly in barrier 12 with Kerrin McEvoy jumping aboard for the first time replacing Mark Zahra in the saddle.

Giving the galloper a patient ride, McEvoy bided his time on Bon Aurum letting the visiting Murray Baker-trained Kiwi Group 1 winner Dal Cielo lead the Prelude field around donning blinkers for the first time.

Race favourite and second pick behind Press Statement, who won the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) in Sydney today on way to his Melbourne debut in the $1 million Group 1 BECK Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10, in the futures odds for the upcoming Group 1 through Ladbrokes.com.au was the Mick Price-trained Ready For Victory.

He missed the kick however and was in a terrible place throughout failing to get into position or ever look a winning chance.

Chris Waller’s Sydney visitor and last start Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) winner at Randwick Metallic Crown moved up to share the lead with Dal Cielo with plenty of others starting to make their move as they approached the home turn.

Kicking on strongly down the outside on the straight was McEvoy and his mount Bon Aurum ($10) who made it two 1400m wins in Melbourne on the trot on way to the Caulfield Guineas over an extra 200m in a fortnight’s time.

It was a four-way photo finish for the placings with a fit looking Michael Moroney-trained son of Sebring Tulsa ($11), sixth to Bon Aurum in the Flemington race last time out, overcoming the outside alley (16 of 16) to cross second in an eye-catching run from the back just ahead of third placed front runner Dal Cielo ($19) who was brave to hold for a minor place after a testing run.

McEvoy was full of post-win praise for Bon Aurum and rates him a big chance to handle the 1600m in the Caulfield Guineas next start.

“He’s a lovely horse and he’s gone from strength to strength,” McEvoy said.

“It’s the first time I’ve ridden him and he just moved beautifully.

“He’s a hoarse of the future that’s for sure.

“He moved nice and fresh and he’s handling his racing really well

“It’s onwards and upwards towards the Guineas now and there’s no worries with the extra trip I don’t think.”

Maher is also confident his horse can handle the extra metres in the Caulfield Guineas test where Bon Aurum is sure to firm from his pre-Prelude win price of $15 to win the Group 1.

“The horse drew an awkward gate today again and Kerrin had to be patient,” he said.

“But credit to the horse, this is only his first racing preparation.

“He’s a tough colt and we didn’t have to do much with him since his last run.

“He’s just a really strong colt.

“The mile should be no worries.”
