The Chris Waller trained Vanbrugh was stepping up from a mid week Warwick Farm win but the punters had it right and the $2.80 favourite strode away in the straight to score a comfortable one and three quarter lengths win.

Runner-up Tatoosh ($10) ran another honest race to fill second spot with the well tried Man Of Choice ($4.40) also making up ground at the end to be one and half lengths away in third spot.

Waller said tha Vanbrugh has been a slow in finding his best form at the beginning of this preparation but has now come good with the better Spring tracks.

“He went missing  a little bit in the first part of the preparation. We thought he might have been a Golden Rose horse but they were pretty quickly expelled when he got beaten as a short price favourite at Canterbury one day,” Waller said.

“We just put it down to wet tracks but now that the tracks have improved fortunately his form has come good.”

“It was a good strong win last start against the older horses and backed up again today.”

Today’s win now gives Waller plenty of confidence heading into the Group 1 $500,000 Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick in aa fortnight.

“There is nothing better than to go into a Group 1 race full of form,” Waller said.

Vanbrugh’s win was the second for the day for Waller and Bowman who combined earlier to take out the Group 2 $200,000 Dyldam Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) with Press Statement.

Bowman was so impressed with Vanbrugh’s win that he was tipping him to be a top contender for the Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 31.
