Markets for the 2015 Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney this Saturday are led by the promising Chris Waller-trained Vanbrugh who steps up in class for this spring assignment.
The Encosta De Lago colt is one of 12 three-year-olds facing off at set weights in Rosehill Race 5 (3:05pm) on Golden Pendant Day on the weekend in the $200,000 Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m).
Drawn in barrier five with Hugh Bowman in the saddle, Vanbrugh pays $3.40 through Ladbrokes.com.au in the latest Gloaming Stakes odds to post his third win at start number eight off a BM70 success over the Warwick Farm mile from September 9.
He has had the one previous stakes run when sixth beaten three lengths by Sebring Sun in the Listed The Rosebud (12000m) at Randwick in early August but is tipped to appreciate the step up in distance for the Gloaming with his end of prep target being Melbourne’s $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on October 31.
Following Vanbrugh in the Gloaming Stakes betting markets are four other single figure hopes including Man Of Choice ($6) and Devil Hawk ($6.50) drawn at opposite ends of the field in gates three and 10 respectively.
Luke Price prepares Manhattan Rain gelding Man Of Choice whose last start produced a big three and three-quarter length victory in a Class 2 over the mile at Kembla Grange, a nice improvement on his seventh to Shards in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) before that.
Devil Hawk is a stablemate to Saturday’s favourite and the Waller-trained Purrealist colt is in top form with two wins from his past three runs including Newcastle’s Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600M) from last Friday that could prove the form line to follow into the Gloaming Stakes.
Also under $10 for Saturday’s clash are Tatoosh ($7.50) in the outside alley for jockey Thomas Huet to overcome but time to get across and Gold Ambition ($9).
Paul Perry’s Newcastle-trained Beneteau gelding is another Spring Stakes graduate from his home track where he ran a neck away second behind Devil Hawk who he gets the chance to turn the tables on just eight days later.
Gold Ambition is drawn well in barrier four with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle of the Bjorn Baker-trained Spring Stakes third placed Savabeel gelding who is out over further than a mile for the first time on the weekend.
Also in the mix at more generous odds for a Gloaming Stakes upset are the likes of Postponed gelding Intrepid Way ($12) who Tommy Berry rides on the weekend after the pair ran under two lengths away sixth in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at the start of the month and Kiwi raider Gobstopper ($15) from the Opaki stables of Andrew Campbell.
