2015 Golden Pendant Field Features Catkins

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller has opted not to run his Epsom Handicap favourite Winx in the Golden Pendant 2015 at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday and instead has just the one runner in the mix with his last start winner Catkins representing the stable.

Due to run as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:45pm (AEST) as the feature Sydney Spring Racing Carnival clash of the weekend, this year’s lucrative $400,000 Group 2 Ronald McDonald House Westmead Golden Pendant (1400m) has attracted a small but still classy field of just eight fillies and mares.

Waller’s sole runner in the set weights plus penalties feature is the always honest Catkins in barrier five with Hugh Bowman booked to ride the $2 million earner.

A six-year-old daughter of Dubawi, Catkins has run top three in 29 of her 35 career starts to date including 16 victories.

Nine of those were at Rosehill where she runs for the 16th time on the weekend looking to improve on her second in last year’s Golden Pendant, after which she went on to run third two starts later in Melbourne’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) over the Flemington mile.

A multiple Group 2 winner and Group 1 placegetter, Catkins was last seen winning the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill a fortnight ago and on Saturday she looks to add to a solid second-up record of three wins and two seconds from seven runs to date.

The mare that beat Catkins home in last year’s Golden Pendant, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Arabian Gold is also set to contest the 2015 edition shooting for back-to-back victories.

She won by a half-length 12 months ago but hasn’t won a race since, the five-year-old grey last seen crossing one and a quarter lengths away fourth to Hooked in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on September 5.

Last year Arabian Gold won the Golden Pendant from barrier two with Blake Shinn in the saddle and this year she gets the inside run from barrier one with Tommy Berry booked for the ride.

Waterhouse has two chances in this year’s clash with her Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner Amanpour also in the mix jumping from gate six with Tim Clark aboard.

Amanpour is second-up on Saturday, the Northern Meteor five-year-old out to atone for a disappointing first-up 11th when beaten over eight lengths by Winx in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill two weeks ago.

Also drawn a treat and coming off some ace lead-up form is seven-year-old Wyong galloper Two Blue for Kristen Buchanan, the veteran sprinter starting from barrier two.

The daughter of Dubleo has run second in four of her past five starts including last Friday at Newcastle behind She’s Clean in the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) from a wide barrier 11 of 16 draw.

Saturday is her sixth run over the 1400m at Rosehill and she has run second over the track and distance three times previously, most recently when runner-up to Rugged Cross in the Listed Winter Stakes in the wet back in July.

Rounding out the Golden Pendant field and all in with a genuine chance of success are the Jason Coyle-trained Group 3 winning Charge Forward four-year-old Slightly Sweet with the outside alley who comes off a Sheraco Stakes fourth, recent Mona Lisa Stakes winner Vergara, the Ron Quinton-trained Peeping and Coyle’s other runner Berry Delicious who loves the Rosehill track (5-3-2-0).
