Kermadec Among 2015 Cox Plate Second Declarations

Chris Waller’s last start George Main Stakes winner and pre-post Cox Plate 2015 favourite Kermadec is among the 73 second declarations taken for Australasia’s weight-for-age championship by Racing Victoria this week.

On Tuesday at midday the number of hopefuls heading towards a run in the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday October 24 was cut from 92 first acceptors to 73 at second declaration stage.

Leading the futures Cox Plate odds at before the latest round of acceptances at $7 was Waller’s Doncaster Mile and George Main champ over the Randwick mile Kermadec.

The four-year-old Teofilo stallion is yet to race at Moonee Valley or over further than 1600m and so is presented with a massive challenge if he is to appear in the Cox Plate field where Waller will shoot for his first win.

Waller still has a total of 12 Cox Plate hopefuls in the mix with the favourite Kermadec joined by fellow second acceptors: gun three-year-old Press Statement, Winx who is also favourite for Sydney’s Epsom Handicap Saturday week, Royal Descent, possible 2015 Caulfield Cup runner Preferment, Kiwi Group 1 winner Who Shot The Barman, French import Weary, Silverball, Moriarty, Sydney Cup champ Grand Marshall and Foreteller.

The then Irish-trained Adelaide (2014) won the Cox Plate last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival as a four-year-old adding to the ace recent record of that age group in the 2040m classic.

Adelaide became the fourth four-year-old in five years to win joining: So You Think (2010), Pinker Pinker (2011) and Ocean Park (2012).

Along wither Kermadec the other notable four-year-olds among the Cox Plate second acceptances in 2015 include: Tony McEvoy’s Australian Guineas runner-up Alpine Eagle, the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained former Perth star Disposition, John O’Shea’s early Caulfield Cup fancy Hauraki and ATC Derby winner Mongolian Khan for New Zealand horseman Murray Baker.

After Kermadec the other best fancied in early Cox Plate betting at the bookies if the Robert Hickmott-trained Fawkner who, if accepted, will be out to become the first eight-year-old Cox Plate winner since Super Impose way back in 1992.

The only horse older than him to win since then was nine-year-old Fields Of Omagh (2006) who also won the 2003 edition as a six-year-old.

The gallant grey from Macedon Lodge was a brave second to Adelaide when beaten a neck in last year’s Cox Plate on the back of a Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) win and is in flying form again this season last seen winning the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) first-up at Flemington.

Other eight-year-olds in the mix include Paul Beshara’s triple Group 1 winner Happy Trails, the Peter Gelagotis-trained Mourinho who recently won the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and the Mick Burles-trained The Cleaner.

Tasmanian hero The Cleaner was runner-up in the PB Lawrence before a win in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley on September 5, an effort he’ll be out to repeat when racing in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) next start back at Caulfield.

The top fancied international Cox Plate raiders still in the mix after second declarations are the Aidan O’Brien-trained Galileo stallion Highland Reel who won the Group 1 Secretariat Stakes (2012m) in the USA back in mid-August, Peter Chappel-Hyam’s one-time favourite Arod last seen crossing second to Solow in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes (1609m) at Goodwood and French-trained gelding Gailo Chop.

Other noteworthy Cox Plate fancies still in contention include the O’Shea-trained Chipping Norton Stakes – Ranvet Stakes double winner Contributer, internationally performing Sebring stallion Criterion for David Hayes & Tom Dabernigh and Gai Waterhouse’s Doomben Cup winner Pornichet.

2015 Cox Plate third acceptances close on Tuesday October 6 ahead of the final field and barriers out on October 20 attracting a final acceptance fee of $27,500.
