2015 Champagne Stakes Nominations Feature Petits Filous

Ciaron Maher’s undefeated daughter of Street Boss Petits Filous is the surprise headline nominee for the Champagne Stakes 2015 to run under the lights at Moonee Valley Racecourse in Melbourne on Friday night.

The flying filly is one of 21 three-year-olds nominated for this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Champagne Stakes (1200m) and has won all four of her career starts to date.

Her past two victories have been in black-type company when winning the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield in mid-August and a month later at Flemington when she beat home Super Cash by over two lengths in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) over the same distance.

She is also a dual Moonee Valley winner after taking out her opening two runs at the notoriously tight track she could return to on Friday evening in the Champagne Stakes.

Maher has his star filly nominated for the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) over the Caulfield mile on October 10, and she could head towards that elite level via the Champagne Stakes.

Yet to be tested over further than 1100m, Petits Filous is currently only rated a $21 chance in futures Thousand Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au that are led by David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s recent Atlantic Jewel Stakes winner Stay With Me ($4.80) and the Peter Moody-trained Group 1 winner Pasadena Girl ($5).

Both top fancies are nominated to face off this Saturday at Caulfield in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m), a race that produced last year’s Thousand Guineas winner Amicus (2nd).

Other last start winning fillies nominated for the Champagne Stakes on Friday include the Lloyd Kennewell-trained Viddora in her first run outside of Adelaide, Mick Price’s Secret Agenda coming off a 1200m Sandown-Lakeside success from the start of the month and a progressive daughter of Dane Shadow Nina Rules for Jason Warren.

As for the other Thousand Guineas hopes in the mix the shortest priced in the latest markets are Lindsay Park’s Redoute’s Choice filly Reemah, the John O’Shea-trained Antelucan and stablemate Painted Firetail all paying $26 for the Group 1.

Runner-up to Pride Of Dubai in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield during the autumn as a two-year-old, Reemah won at Geelong last month before a last start sixth when beaten four lengths in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight last time out on September 12.

Antelucan represents the powerhouse Godolphin stable, the daughter of Domesday returning this weekend having last been seen running third to Takedown at Canberra back in March in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m).

The fellow O’Shea-trained Painted Firetail meanwhile steps up to stakes company for the first time having last been seen running third in a Class 2 over 1200m at Kembla Grange a fortnight ago.

Other noteworthy Champagne Stakes nominations this season include the Murray Johnson-trained Reward For Effort filly Take Pride who ran third to Petits Filous last start, Group 1 performed Serenade and Gerald Ryan’s daughter of Snitzel Fireworks who is also nominated for both the Thousand Guineas Prelude in Melbourne and the Stan Fox Stakes in Sydney this weekend.
