Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Chris Waller’s in-form Epsom Handicap favourite Winx is the headline nomination taken for the feature race at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, the fillies-and-mares’ Golden Pendant 2015.
Nominations for the lucrative $400,000 Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) are extended until 11am (AEST) on Tuesday after just 11 female gallopers were entered for the set weights plus penalties clash.
Two of the likely favourites should they run who both come off last start victories hail from the Waller stables with Winx and Catkins also topping the ratings.
Street Cry four-year-old Winx has won her three latest starts including the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) in Brisbane during the winter and the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) first-up at Rosehill on September 12.
She gets two weeks between runs for the Golden Pendant where she will look to continue her ace Rosehill record that currently sits at three wins from four starts at the track.
Winx is currently leading early betting at Ladbrokes.com.au for the $1 million Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on October 3 paying $4 for the elite level held just seven days after the Golden Pendant.
Stablemate Catkins also comes off a first-up win, the six-year-old Dubawi grey having won the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (2200m) at the same meeting Winx won the Theo Marks at.
She is a $13 hope for the Epsom over the mile and has a strong second-up record to date of three wins and two seconds from seven previous runs.
Catkins is also a nine-time winner at Rosehill from 15 starts and was runner-up behind Arabian Gold in last year’s Golden Pendant 12 months ago before going on to cross third to Bonaria in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) in Melbourne two runs later.
Gai Waterhouse’s defending Golden Pendant winner Arabian Gold is also nominated to run in the race again this season, another grey daughter of Dubawi who is second-up on the weekend.
She returned at Randwick on September 5 in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and was far from disgraced when beaten only one and a quarter lengths by Hooked.
Waterhouse could also shoot for back-to-back Golden Pendant victories with her Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner from the autumn Amanpour who comes off a disappointing first-up 11th to Winx in the Theo Marks.
Along with Waller’s dynamic duo the other last start winner in the Golden Pendant mix is the Peter Moody-trained Redoute’s Choice six-year-old Abidewithme who beat home last year’s Crown Oaks winner Set Square at Caulfield over 1400m on August 29.
A winner of eight of her 23 starts now, that was her maiden run down under having transferred to Moody’s care from New Zealand where she boasts plenty of Group 1 form.
Other notable Golden Pendant entries this year including Jason Coyle’s multiple Group 3 winner Slightly Sweet who ran fourth to Catkins first-up in the Sheraco Stakes and perennial runner-up Two Blue who ran second to She’s Clean in the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle last Friday.
