2015 Shannon Stakes Nominations: Messene Top Rated Entry

The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Messene is the top rated of the Shannon Stakes 2015 nominations taken for the Rosehill Racecourse showdown in Sydney on Saturday.

There are currently 13 nominees for the $175,000 Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m), entries for the Golden Pendant Day support act extended until 11am (AEST) on Tuesday.

Of the original nominees the shortest-priced for the upcoming $1 million Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m), a possible next-up assignment for the best performed in the Shannon Stakes, is Lonhro seven-year-old Messene.

Messene hasn’t won a race since the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) back in March last year, but he returns to that track and distance for the first time in the Shannon Stakes looking to break the drought.

He has had three runs this prep including a nice second-up third to Royal Descent, runner-up in the George Main Stakes over the Randwick mile last weekend, in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) from August 22.

His last start was a fortnight back at Rosehill when eighth to Epsom Handicap favourite Winx in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m), a run he is tipped to improve on when out over more distance.

Messene pays $21 in futures Epsom Handicap odds at Ladbrokes.com.au for next month’s elite level and is one of three Shannon Stakes nominations for Team Hawkes.

He is joined in the entries list by the in-form God’s In Him and Ninth Legion.

Six-year-old God’s In Him has won his three most recent runs in Sydney including a Benchmark 80 over 1400m first-up at Rosehill from September 12, Saturday to be the lightly raced galloper’s maiden run in black-type company.

Stablemate Ninth Legion will be second-up this Saturday on the back of a brave third when beaten under half a length by Winx in the Theo Marks with Tye Angland in the saddle.

After Messene the next shortest priced Shannon Stakes hope in the futures markets is the Chris Waller-trained Flamingo Star ($26).

European import Flamingo Star is a six-year-old Areion stallion who has had four runs in Australia for just the one top three finish, his last start a disappointing ninth when beating home just one other runner in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle last Friday.

Waller has a total of four Shannon Stakes hopefuls this year with Flamingo Star joined by Foreteller who is undefeated over the 1500m, Doomben Cup third placegetter from the winter I’m Imposing, Group 1 winner in Perth last December Moriarty and Strawberry Boy.

A winner of back-to-back Doomben races at the end of his last campaign, Redoute’s Choice seven-year-old Strawberry Boy returned in the Theo Marks when finishing fourth in the blanket Top 4 and boasts three wins, a second and a third from his seven previous second-up assignments.

Also coming off nice lead-up runs into the Shannon Stakes this year include the likes of Akavoroun who was runner-up to Disposition at Flemington on September 12 in black-type company, the David Payne-trained Foreign Prince who was second at this track and distance at the end of last month and Newcastle galloper Wouldnt It Be Nice who ran third in last week’s Cameron Handicap at his home track.
