Hill Stakes 2015 Tips & Selections

The 2015 Hill Stakes is one of the key support races on Saturday’s George Main Stakes Day line-up at Randwick Racecourse, betting tips on the full weight-for-age showdown found below.

Magic Hurricane

Sixteen horses will take to the Sydney track in Randwick Race 7 (4:25pm) to face off in a capacity edition of the $200,000 Group 2 Ascend Sales Trophies Hill Stakes (2000m) including the two emergencies Magic Hurricane and Bohemian Lily who came in for the scratched duo of Hawkspur and Kapour.

Leading the latest Hill Stakes betting markets online through Ladbrokes.com.au for the weekend’s staying feature at $3.40 is Complacent drawn wide in barrier 13 11 but coming off a good one and a quarter length win over Saturday’s George Main Stakes favourite Kermadec in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) earlier in the month.

To date the John O’Shea-trained Authorized stallion has had eight runs for four wins and three seconds, an excellent record for the lightly-raced five-year-old who was injured after a 2013 Victoria Derby second and didn’t race again until last month.

The next best fancied chances in the Hill Stakes odds this season are Magic Hurricane ($5.50) in gate five with top Sydney hoop James McDonald riding, market mover Who Shot Thebarman ($8) for Chris Waller and his fellow Group 1 winning stablemate Beaten Up ($9.50).

So can the top four run first four or is there value to be found elsewhere tipping the likes of Chance To Dance ($13) for an upset Hill Stakes result on the weekend?

#17 Magic Hurricane ($5.50)

Firming odds on this in-form Godolphin galloper who will be hard to beat now he’s gained a run. The six-year-old import has had four runs down under including a 1400m win at Randwick on debut in Australia. This time in he has had two Rosehill runs including a win over Silverball in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m), the runner-up franking that form winning the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes over 2000m last weekend in Sydney. Good gate (5) and good hoop (McDonald) are two more ticks for an improver who seems to love Sydney racing.

#9 Bonfire ($15)

Gai Waterhouse-trained seven-year-old won the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) back in late June in the wet and will get a soft track this weekend first-up with a good resuming record to date (6-2-1-2). Comes off a third in a trial here from earlier in the month and should fly fresh from a good barrier (7). He’ll go up on the speed and with a clear run if Waterhouse has him spot on for the return could take some running down over the closing stages.

#1 Complacent ($3.40)

Firm favourite just a little short to take for the win from the wide double digit gate. If he overcomes the barrier though this ultra-consistent galloper can go back-to-back after winning the Chelmsford in a strong edition full of Group 1 winners. Well and truly over his injury woes, loves Randwick (3-2-0-0) and should only be on the up and up.
