The headline race in Sydney at Saturday’s Randwick meeting is the 2015 George Main Stakes, betting tips for the Group 1 mile feature found below.
Due to run as Randwick Race 6 at 3:45pm (AEST), this year’s $500,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) field features just 10 runners including three for the state’s premier trainer Chris Waller who has won two of the past three editions of the weight-for-age showdown.
Waller prepares the first two in George Main Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival as he shoots for back-to-back victories following the success of Sacred Falls (2014) for the stable 12 months ago.
His Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec runs on the weekend third-up after two good lead-up runs and pays a firming $2.70 to salute over the Randwick mile in Group 1 company again.
The four-year-old is followed in the latest George Main Stakes odds by stablemate Royal Descent ($4.40) who has a gun record over the mile, a distance she’ll appreciate getting back up to this Saturday.
Also at single figures are fellow mare Lucia Valentina ($7) who is a dual Group 1 winner for Kris Lees in a nice gate three draw second-up and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Vespone stallion Pornichet ($7) who won the Doomben Cup in Brisbane over the winter.
So can Waller win again with his well fancied stablemates crossing the line ahead of their rivals or is there more value in tipping an upset George Main Stakes result from a longer priced hopeful such as Sweynesse ($13) who was covering plenty of ground late in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) first-up at the track when ninth to Hooked?
#8 Royal Descent ($4.40)
Royal Descent is yet to win over 1600m but her record at the mile is still very imposing as she boasts six seconds and two thirds from eight previous runs over the distance she is back up to this weekend third-up. She won the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) first time in this prep over Pornichet before a solid third in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) from September 5 that Kermadec was runner-up in. Last year’s George Main winner came off a Chelmsford fourth and she has Hugh Bowman in the saddle here. She’s seven places from seven runs over the track and distance and with some luck she can break the duck and be first past the post here finally.
#5 Kermadec ($2.70)
Waller’s Doncaster champ is deserving favourite and comes off two very nice lead-up runs including the Chelmsford second when beaten only by Complacent. The Teofilo stallion has a nice Randwick mile record (3-1-2-0) and getting the 1600m third-up will suit. He is firming in the markets and is perhaps getting a tiny big short to back for the win for certain, but replacement hoop for the suspended Boss Glyn Schofield will give him a good ride from barrier five and he’s every chance to give Waller his third win in four years.
#7 Hauraki ($26)
Juicy price for place chance, Reset four-year-old Hauraki from the John O’Shea and Godolphin stables. The galloper was 10th first-up in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) but there is big room for improvement with extra metres. Won the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill in late March before the second behind Mongolian Khan in the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m). Is out wide in barrier 10 but last year’s champ had the same gate. Good Win Rate so far (38%) and Randwick suits as well.
